I'm using fixed. Looks better IMO.
To me, wide looks better!
Try using wide on a 24" monitor. It's so freaking annoying.

I used fixed purely because it was the default for a long time and I got used to it. Hell I'm pretty sure at one point mental made wide-only and I bitched :p
I now view all websites at this width as it leaves a lot of room on my widescreen to have games or videos running alongside. Or hell 2 browsers so I can reference wiki/ dictionary.com/ google while posting :)
I think it's a case of personal preference.
