HTML>PHP as starters.

ASM is a right bitch to get your head around, personal experience tells me that it takes a long time and great patience.

C++ although a good language has a bit of a steep learning curve, although is better recognised than ASM in the industry.

Visual Basic - don't know, never used it. Stayed well away from visual.

PHP/HTML is different to desktop programming language.
HTML simply displays information, nothing else.
PHP communicates with the client and server.

Depends really what you want to do, desktop programming or web coding?

And if it's web coding for example, do you want to become involved in web programming, such as HTML, SQL, PHP and Perl (etc), or would you rather become more aesthetically involved, HTML, CSS, JS (etc).

I believe there's a sticky in the coding section explaining in better detail the programming lanaguages, plusn there are literally thousands, if not tens of thousands of threads, FAQs, etc on the net, on very popular sites such as p2l, GD.net, The Code Project, etc...
