If you do 3rd party insurance is for ingury and the other persons car. The only thing left out is your car, which means any damage to it would be paid by you. This is the point of 3rd party insurance, so if the person doesn't have the money the victim can still get money for the damage from the insurance company.
I'm not sure how good the Aussy insurance is (your Austrailian right?) but I assume it's similar to the UK what with us being so close.

This shows the people are trying to get their money from the wrong person. There insurance company should be getting money from yours. I highly suggest you check out your 3rd party contract. This is pricisely what it's made for.
It may take a bit of effort to find what your rights are but it will most likely be better than having to pay 9 grand by yourself. If you definately had some form of insurance you should be fine.

Their insurance company paid all their bills. It was a 2007 Mitsubishi 4x4 so the costs were high even though there was only damage to the front bumper. I now have to pay back their insurance company.

And no, 3rd party insurance here is part of the car registration, it only covers damage done to the person, not their car (their car would be the 2nd party).

James, it was my fault, but only because i moved forward to see past a huge truck that was parked at the side and i couldn't see past it. But technically it is still my fault.

Are you totally sure about that? 3rd party means the person and there car. I believe the 2nd party would be the insurance companies and you being the 1st party.

These are aus websites, which defines it as them and there property (car).

Seriously that crap if it doesn't cover you for damages to their car. What if some poor guy crashes and can't afford to pay the damages? That's what insurance is supposed to be for. It doesn't matter if they themselves loose their car as it was caused by them but you shouldn't have to pay the damages.
