What could be interesting is to find where are the dialogues stored, with the NPC names etc... are they client or server sided... ? I'll look at it.
i dont know if will be helpfull or what but when i did the server in ubuntu and in centos (in centos i needed to open ports...) also, to test, i put the external ip, on every document, if not i was recivieng connection problems.... also in the mongodb edit mongod.conf to bind ip to external ip.
I did this on VM. I think i must clarify.

I did the installation on debian 9 today and it worked fine, you have to change network.properties (login & gameserver) and server.properties (gameserver) in order to make it work properly and maybe you should check if the ports 8888,8889,9000 are open
Make sure to copy the data folder (BDOServer/data) in BDOServer/Server/gameserver/bin, giving you something like this :

downloaded the torrent client of ogrefest yes , am trying to recheck it atm with their launcher

You can edit account information using "nosqlbooster", or Studio 3T that I have found is much better. IMO.
