Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 60 seconds exceeded

Hey guys, Increasingly when updating character ranking for example I am getting this error, is there a faster way / SQL query I could use instead for this? Only reason I ask is because I really don't do SQL much
"Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 60 seconds exceeded"
