What is leeching?

Hello everyone,

I wonder what you all think about leeching and what leeching is in your opinion.
Is using MAIET material leeching or not? (2005 files, GAP, GAP Guide)
Are the files leaked from Level Up Brazil leeched? (2007 & 2008 files)
Is using client and/or server files from other servers leeching if used for development? (Phail's Gunz emulator using Gunz-Extreme client)

Please post your opinions on this.

EDIT: Reason for posting is that I heard different opinions about this in the last couple of days and I wonder what most you think.

Granted, we do leech MAIETS files, we need to. But taking there files is leeching (dilemma, since alot of us are against leeching)

Taking files not released and releasing them without permission is leeching, wether you admit its not yours, or you claim its yours.

Well, you called me a leecher when I was talking about the 2008 files but I never claimed those as my own creation.
If I released those I'm a leecher and if I hold on to them I'm selfish.
See how those things don't really go well?

idk, i think leeching for me is like fucking downloading shit loadz of hax for example and using them, so its like ur too nub to make something so u just download it, but then why would it be released.

We're discussing leeching in the Gunz pserver scene, not people who leech hacks but thanks for your input anyway.

I agree with you on both things, I never released anything I made myself for Gunz.
I did a lot for my own pserver back then tho but I know that doesn't count as I said myself about Styx referring to his work at Trinity.
I admit that I have stuff from Trinity like their latest server files and TriviaBot but only to learn from it and I will not use things they made on my public server.
I have no problem with Phail using the old Gunz-Extreme client to get his emulator done since its for a good cause.
How many of us didn't use the LG files when they got released at first for development purposes, I even think you learned a lot from it (not sure).
The LG files made new things available for us which are seen on all major Gunz servers today.
I know that you're probably going to say that the LG files where released by Keith so that doesn't make it leeching but don't forget Wizkid reuploaded them and made a guide for it and that Keith couldn't go back anymore after his lets say ''emo moment''.

I actually never really touched the LG files. The only runnable I learned from was GunZ2830's.

Only time I touched the LG runnable was the first time around that Peter made legend and...oh yea the like...10 minutes(?) I actually did play legacy.

and he did release them so yea id say its ok to make a guide. Besides it was the old version if I remember correctly.

I could see how Killer releasing the files be considered leaching.
He got it from a source, the source told him not to give the files out to anyone else.
Killer agreed to not release the files, in exchange he gets the files. The only thing in those files that could be of any interest to anyone is the .mef and a few other modifications MAIET may have done to it.

Well releasing them wouldn't make you a leecher because development of GunZ private server's started because MAIET exists. Also, people are called leechers on this community at least when one releases the work of another user of the community who wished to keep them private. There's no one from MAIET to whine out here :P. And MAIET is the main source of Gunz development. What is done by the members of the community is just by ideas drawn from that game. So I don't see any fault in MAIET stuff being released.

Like you see the 2007 files. No one has ever called RoA or System32 a leecher. Everyone's happy as they can run their own servers. So this is definitely not leeching.

And also, I'm not saying that leeching is really leeching if people are happy or unhappy. It's just that MAIET's the main source and people want things from it to run better servers.

Leeching is taking credit for making something that you didn't make.

Leaking is giving something out that the maker said you're not supposed to.

Using MAIET's material is not leeching unless we take credit for it.
