My favorite domain type to use for a personal web site is net, because it makes the most sense, plus there is a lesser chance for your domain name to be in use already because so many people use com.

Here's a little information I picked up during my experience with web hosting that I thought people might like to know.

com = Company. (The vast majority of people use this domain out of context)
net = Network.
org = Organization.
edu = Education. (Included edu because someone said org is for school domains)

com, net and org are all global and usually sold for the same price by domain registrars.
