Is there no way to convert dbs?

Yes but its very old and the database isnt able to be converted since all the updates have been going on.

I'm sure that if you really wanted to use the old db you could figure it out or find someone who has written programs / can write program to convert it for you. It might be worth doing considering I myself have actually discovered many db problems, especially when it comes to quests and mob placement.
