Just talking internet speed wise, how many players do you think i could hold with nice latency if i said i have 20mb download speed broadband?
Hope someone has an idea :)

I think about 200 or 300 players without lag.

wouldnt it depend more on upload speed? like its all good that u can download the data from their client at 20Mb (well depending on their upload speeds) but u will need a desent upload speed too (so they can download the data) so havin a good ratio on upload:download is the best way to go, but 20Mb download is great, just check ur upload

Just try it out. Put the limit to like 1000 and when you notice it starting to lag find out how many people are on and put it down to that limit.

its all dependent on upload speed as its typically the slower of up/down speeds.
ive worked it that its around 5-8k/s per person
so if you have a 20mb down 128k up (which is standard where i am) you'd be able to have
128kilobits = 16kilobytes/s
so you should realistically be able to have about 2 - 3 people with no lag
logically as your upload goes fast it'll be more people
ie 1024mbit up = 128kilobytes
which would allow approx 16 - 25 people lag free
of course these are just arbitrary numbers
they do vary depending on ISP limits, TCP overheads and other internet traffic (such as if you host a web server mail server or something like vent etc etc)

Re: [Ascent] How many can my server hold?
I did the math on this a few days ago. I came to the conclusion of this.
100MBIT server w/ good system specs can hold around 2000 players
that would be 20 players per 1MBIT. I have 2MBIT upload so im guessing i can host anywhere from 40-60 players.
So I think if you stick to 1MBIT = 20 Players youll be around the correct ammount.
