How safe is ascent / antrix?

Well, quite simply, I am wondering if it is still safe to use this emulator... Why you might ask? Well, I will tell you:

Fact 1: It is a known fact now that Burlex (And whoever else may be involved) have coded a hack into their emulator (Ascent) to remotely shutdown / crash servers (So ive heard thats what it does, I just know there is one).

Fact 2: It is also known that Burlex DDoSed a project website due to a conflict between the two projects.

Now, on to my point: What is the one thing a DDoS needs? Slaves (Hosts) to launch the attack. Whats the fastest way to get this in his position? I hate to say it, but hide code in ascent to do the attack, as well as do a call home each time the emulator is started so the IP of the server is added to a list of servers running ascent. You put the two together.


NOTE: I AM NOT SAYING THEY ARE DOING THIS!!! I am saying this to get people thinking and hopefully people to confirm it to be false, as I for one hope it is. I am also NOT saying one emulator / project is better than the other, nor am I saying for people to pack up and leave ascent - as I said above, its to open peoples eyes and hopefully get people looking into it..

If you dont have anything useful to contribute to the post then please do not reply, my post count, name, etc, etc has no relevence on the point I am trying to make, nor does it make my point any less valid.

Further more, if you doubt my words, read the ascent forums - burlex himself admits to DDoSing the other project (Yes, I know the details, but my post isnt about that so I am not going to go into them).

This is not weird it is the truth . Sadly for that but it is i was on ascent forums when all this info was on there atm luckely its removed from there forums but it is already out there .

So i would say it will be unsafe when an morron on your server knows how to bring it down . On the other hand it sould be somone that is on ascent forums as an member at the time it was posted ;)

Well, here is how i see it: If some one looks deep enough into the code I am sure they would find it - so its not just people registered on the ascent forums at the time (Though, they may not be looking for it, so the chances would be a lot less likely). However, now that it is public knowledge, it expands the range to everyone honestly, anyone who heard about it, read about it, etc, etc knows its there and can potentially find it.

i use ascent for 6 months now :) and im still finding bugs with crash dumps :P

Well, gameplay bugs are really no concern - everything has bugs, nothing is bug-free. My concern is are the people running ascent servers in tern acting as a host to DDoS attacks, and possibly more.

ahha ya :P my rev i dont see any code that could make me crash every min........ so i dono if thats true i tihnk it was done ingame

well it did happen but it shouldnt happen againg that attack made his name go down a lot so i dont think hell do it again. but if u piss anyone off thell will be a war, i already had a few wars cuz ppl like to spam there server on mine, i spam back :P

lol ... they wont crash your server if ya follow their rules ... (I dont know them atm) ... but I do recall them asking people not to SELL stuff on their server couse they wer givin it freely ... so *CERTAIN SERVER* went and got a donations shop ... :o ... but again on the other hand the ANTRIX crew WAS refusing to accept ani donations offered to them bye *CERTAIN SERVER* xD ... Just my oppinnion ... Follow their rules ur server wont crash :p

i agree with kira, ascent is supposed to be free, so you shouldn't make anyone pay for something on it

For the ddos attack he used an exploit in some p2p program.

And the code is open source, so if there was any intentional exploits someone would find them.
