    Newbie here

I hate to post this, but these forums are filled with so much information I get lost sometimes :S

What would you guys recommend for a server? I've been occasionally reading these forums over the past few months and have yet to setup my own server. I don't really need anything fancy, just the ability to login and aquire any current item and kill stuff (as far as maybe like 1.10, the Naxx patch I think?).

Also, anyone have a working item list, perhaps even creatures? I know that's one thing that would be useful :)

The two most successful emulators at the moment are Kobold (Ludmilla), and MangOS. It's up to you to decide which one you wanna use. If you go for Kobold, I suggest using Kenny's 2.0 Repack (it's in the stickies). If it's MangOS you're hungering for, go here for the latest rev, then dowload the latest SDB (silver's database), or just use a recent repack. Have fun deciding.

Before I begin installing one.. How do I handle the WoW client? Do I need to do a fresh install, and install the highest supported patch or? I currently have an active account, so my WoW is up-to-date and all.

My question is though what do I do with my client, which is up to 2.0.3 now? Do I need to reinstall WoW up to patch 1.12 and stop getting patches, or can I just run a server and it will only use 1.12 content even though I'm sitting on 2.0.3?

Perhaps even install a separate WoW alongside my updated one and somehow get it to only 1.12. Basically, I want to run a Private Server but at the same time be able to go on Live realms with my real account ;)

Mouse, what I do is use my first install of WoW for public WoW servers and then I installed a second copy of WoW and updated it to 1.12.1 with a patch file I downloaded from FileFront (search google for wow 1.12.1 patch site:filefront.com. Hope this helps.

This is very true! WoW doesn't require registry keys to run, however when you open WoW and play, it will write some data to the registry (location of wow.exe, etc). What I have done is used WinRAR to back up an initial install of WoW so if I mess something up I just un-rar and start over again.
