I am trying to decide whether to run linux or windows on a dedicated WoW server machine. Its a fairly old computer that I will be using and it won't have any other applications on it except web hosting stuff (which doesn't take a heavy load).
The server has the following specs:
Architecture: Intel 32 bit i386
Processor: 766mhz Celeron
RAM: 128mb
Networked by: Ethernet crossover cable connected to Windows XP (When previously networked XP to Vista, it received minimal slowdown. Not very noticeable.)
Operating System: Undecided
The client has the following specs:
Architecture: AMD 64bit
Processor: AMD Athlon 2 GHz (Dual Core)
RAM: 1gig
Networked by: Wireless USB to router. It will share its internet connection with the server so it shouldn't have much lag at all. (I think)
Operating System: XP (faster gaming)
The server will take a maximum load of 5 people. The average load will be one person (me on the XP client). It isn't supposed to be a host machine, but may be depending on how the server goes.
So my question is whether or not I should run Linux or XP.
If I decide Linux:
1. Should I go with a stripped down, very small distro of Linux?
2. Which emulator should I use? I am assuming MangOS.
3. What distro of Linux includes support for getting its internet from a shared connection?
4. Will I have any problems?
5. Can you suggest a distro?
If I decide Windows:
1. Should I go with a stripped down, barebones version of Windows?
2. Which emulator should I use (I'd prefer one that is most complete and stable)
3. Will it be slower than Linux?
5. Anything else you can suggest?
Any response is more than welcome!
