What is WoW?
World Of Warcraft is MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) developed by Blizzard (the same who created Starcraft, Warcraft and Diablo).
What is the official homepage of this game?
World of Warcraft Community Site
Is this game free?
No, if you want to play you have to pay blizzard for this game. Of course, you can play in emulated private servers.
Do I have to pay money if I want to play in emulated servers?
No, this is totally free in most cases, but some server admins may require compulsory donations for more features available to you or the server may be monthly subscriptions-based.
What do I need if I want to play the game?
The newest WoW client (usually). Links below.
How to connect to a private server
1. The user has to edit realmlist.wtf file located in WoW client's directory. It should look something like (&after editing):
set realmlist your.ip.address.or.dns.address
(set realmlist 127.0.0.1)
or
2. The user has to make a shorcut to WoW.exe file and edit the shortcut. He should add -console to the end of the path, i.e.:
"C:\Games\WoW\WoW.exe" -console
And then during the game in the login screen he should press "~" key (tylde) and then enter:
realmlist your.ip.address.or.dns.address
(realmlist 127.0.0.1)
Note: the login username and password is different for each server, so you have to register on every separately where you intend to play.
Is emulation illegal?
I don't know for sure. Many argue on this but there is clearly written in EULA of WoW that emulation, reverse engineering, tunneling, etc. is forbidden, but then again if you don't ever agree to the EULA, you can't be turned in for something you didn't agree to. :) Later emulators acually uses some files from WoW client, so it's easier to get sued now.
What are the main problems of WoW emulators?
The worst thing is that there can't be many players online in one server because new server get errors and can't join the game. Some servers currently are able to handle up to 1200 users, but those server files aren't public.
What is the size of WoW client installed?
4.5-6GBs
What is the size of WoW server installed?
With all maps - ~400MBs, without maps - ~40MBs
What are the system requirements for WoW client?

Launch the game and look to the very bottom-left.
What is wrong if I see the message about unknown version during the try to login?
This means that your client version is not supported by the server you are connecting to. The versions should match. You should use proper vanilla client or hackpatch if the server requires one.
The game exits while loading the world.
This happens when the latency is too big and there are many users online in the server you are connecting to.
I can't patch the game. I want to apply x.x.x patch but the patch gives errors even if my current version meets the patch requirements.
Delete wow.exe and then run repair.exe. Then the checker will degrade your WoW client to 1.0.0 (it usually downloads some required files from the internet).
Then download proper patch (full one - those usually are a lot bigger than minor patches). All patching depending on your machine can take some time. Even hours.
What are the registry strings for wow?
(usually useful when you re-install your Windows and are forced to re-install WoW client, because patches can't be applied when the patcher does not know you have the game client installed)
Edit it to suit your system conf.Code:[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall\World of Warcraft] "DisplayIcon"="D:\\Games\\World of Warcraft\\WoW.exe" "DisplayName"="World of Warcraft" "UninstallString"="C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Blizzard Entertainment\\World of Warcraft\\Uninstall.exe" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\World of Warcraft] "UninstallPath"="C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Blizzard Entertainment\\World of Warcraft\\Uninstall.exe" "InstallPath"="D:\\GAMES\\WORLD OF WARCRAFT\\" "GamePath"="D:\\GAMES\\WORLD OF WARCRAFT\\WOW.EXE"
Some info about emulators
History (by [lexx] - as long as I remember)
The first emulators ever for WoW was WoWpython and RunWoW developed years ago. Those both had quit the business because of legal problems with Blizzard - the owner of WoW. Apparently Blizzard won. There were some fixes, improvements of WoWpython by many developers as it was open source project, but no serious group took the development it their hands, so the emulator stopped.
Then one Latvian developer called WAD created WoWemu - pretty nice emulator. But the developer was disliked because he required money for his emulators. Obviously his emulator releases were leaked by people who brought it by money to others so WAD decided to protect the emulator. But nothing is uncrackable. But WAD didn't let his hands down, and added even more hard-to-crack protections. But they were bypassed again.
After ~year the development of WoWemu was stopped. No reason was given. The sources were never available to public.
WoWD, Ludmlilla and MaNGoS - were introduced soon each after another. All of them are WoWpython based as far as I understand from some source snippets.
WoWWoW was released somewhere between those posted above. It was quite stable and had most of features and the setup required just to change few things in one file and launch the executable. The emulator was closed source, but there are source somewhere around available to everyone who wants it. As far as I know, no one continues the development.
Ludmilla was developed in a closed group, but time by time some files were leaked to public. People said it was about to become WoWemu-like - people to be asked to pay for the emulator. But the emulator soon went underground and even said to be dead. But months after Ludmilla was told to be alive (now called Kobold).
There isn't many info on Kobold which was continued by russians. The project seems to be very closed and almost no info about devs is available. They tend to release 'lite' versions of emu, which are pretty decent to play on.
MaNGoS is an open source emulator. The development is really active. You can track down the updates in SourceForge.
DelphiEmu is a closed source emulator under Delphi written by Russians. The emulator performance is quite nice, but it's in early development stage.
Database requirements:
WoWpython - MySQL
WoWemu - text file
WoWWoW - text file
Ludmilla - MySQL
MaNGoS - MySQL
DelphiEmu - MySQL
The databases aren't compatible one to another, but there are tools to convert between emulators.
Proper emulator for you
>Take WoWemu if you want easy setup. But it's dead so no compatibility with newer clients. You will need hackpatches which are hard to find/install/remove(!). You will not be able to use that client with any other emulator or official server
>Take DelphiEmu, Lumdlilla or MaNGoS if you are not afraid of setting up MySQL database. It takes some time before you know how and what to set up, but it's worth of it.
>Take WoWWoW if you are not against playing with 1.8.4 client.
>In my opinion, only MaNGoS has a bright future.
