    1TB Drive

Just recieved my Western Digital Mybook Pro 1000Gb, 1Tb (Terabyte) USB External Hard Drive, the performance on it is a little slow at times but i've already filled up about 400gb on it. It gets extremely hot under pressure. I might do some speed tests on it later if I can get time.

What is it? Two 500gb drives in raid?

And how much did it cost you? 500 quid? =P

    Umm...
Do not apply excessive pressure to the top casing of the drive.

I know Hitachi already has a 1TB drive. Now WD has one too? (WD10000xx?)

eww... would probably have been 30% cheaper to buy 4x 250gb drives and get external enclosures for em.

    Newegg.com - Western Digital My Book Pro II WDG2TP10000N 1TB 7200 RPM USB 2.0 / IEEE 1394a / 1394b External Hard Drive - Retail
I didn't order from there, as I live in the UK. It's quite large so I would expect it to have x2 500gb drives inside. It has RAID aswell... It actaully has been performing much better now my rooms not so hot, I may strip the casing off next week to have a little look.

Thought the Hitachi drive has yet to go into retail.

    Much less tbh. =P

    A 250gb drive is ~$85.

A damn 1TB drive will be hundreds. O.O

It does have 2x 500GB drives in RAID. Check the manufacturer's site. =P

Though $400 (on sale) isn't bad for that kind of external storage.

The only thing i find 1tb Drives good for, is really hosting servers. The likelyhood of one person actually using a whole 1000GB lettalone 500GB is very little. Although people come to pc stores and say "OMG Gimme the biggest hard drive you have!" i always find myslf very opinionated toward this as why would you spend your money on so much space, when the adverage person nerver uses over 50GB. :ermm:

...that's the two in my main system that haven't filled up yet. I have another few TB in a server (see the thread titled "how much hard disk space do you have" or something similar) and probably several more in a few crates of unconnected but filled drives.

Mostly anime (lol) and other multimedia.

    Re: 1TB Drive

My backups alone were over 150gb on my last format I just did last night/this morning.. I'm definatly not the 'average' user.. considering I still have to throw mroe onto my backup (I have my 2 Raptors still to plug in that are full of junk, in the process of renovating how my storage system works.. and raptors had to go to be dependable for my server hosting.. throwing them into a new system I'm piecing together with my old 6800 gt.

When I'm fully up and goign and my programs are installed, I bounce back and forth between 250-300 GB easily, with much more coming on and on.. I had to constantly get rid of stuff and clear things out before I formatted.. now with my new TB of storage, I am more then ready to keep going without needing to do my spring cleaning every few months.

    Re: 1TB Drive

External Drives are handy indeed :-) My next step is to throw some cash into a 24 port gigabit switch, finally put my gigabit NIC's to some use, helps an awful lot too :-)

Is it perhaps a faulty fan in the casing thats causing those odd noises?

    Re: 1TB Drive

why do you need a 24 port, 4-6 should do for a home network. its not the fan cus i can hear it over the funny noises, must be some sort of component in there.

    Re: 1TB Drive

I Custom built the house Im in with my own hands, I have 24 ports throughout the house for wired connections, because as handy as my Wireless is, wireless connections eat alot more throughput then a standard wire.. plus wire goes MUCH faster through a gigabit line.. and my house is sort of the hub for all my buddies to hang out, and I need the gigabit speeds for when I am transfering my large database's to other computers I work with.

Its definatly the drive spindle causing the noise then.. sort of like a vibrating CD when its spinning up.. sometimes harddrives cause those noises.. If you feel like fixing it, look for some silicone strips to put inside teh casing where the case meets the drive, that helps an awful lot.. If you feel liek voiding teh warranty and openign it anyway ;)
