    Alienware m17x - Thoughts?

I've been wanting to sell my desktop for a long time and purchase a laptop that will last me a long time without having to upgrade it. Then I thought, why not Alienware?

I've always been against the idea of getting an overpriced machine but it works in to my budget. I can get it financed down to $125 a month for a top of the line laptop. I get a few discounts from school that really help with price.

What are everyones' thoughts about this laptop? Have you used it in person? Know of anything better? Let me know, please. :P

I like it because all the accessories, including the carry case, all look sweet and all match. With my OCD, I love that.

Which one? r3 or classic? i think there both a little to pricey. I think you should get the m11x or its m13x i think idk the one thats just $999 since the stuff they put into suits the price.

If you have the cash then it doesn't matter tbh. They are good machines.

    The r3.

I like the m17x for the larger screen. I messed with it today at fry's and loved it.

I'm wanting to get the fully loaded version I guess you could call it. 16 GB of memory on a laptop is pretty beast.

You wouldn't need so much ram just 4-6gb would do unless what are you using it for? Traveling or ?? Either way i think if you really have the money and you want it go for it. They give you a warranty anyways so if you don't like it at all then just return it. Also i think the keyboard led color thing is cool and does it fit your needs and whats the pros and cons you encountered with it?

    more ram doesn't mean better
16 GB is good for a server,
but a laptop? What are you gonna do with 16 GB ram?
make photoshop images larger than a wall?
my old 2 GB Ram pc can run anything just fine
and my 4 GB Ram laptop always has at least 2 GB Ram spare, as developper and gamer I don't see the point of 16 GB Ram

It is sweet and all but you'd have to chain it to yourself if you don't want to lose it.

I know how you feel, I'll be moving to the United States soon and bringing my PC and 32" monitor simply isn't viable. I very heavily considered selling it and using the cash to buy a high-end gaming laptop as a replacement, because we'll be staying with family for a while before we finally get a place of our own. Sure Alienware is expensive, but when you compare it to other laptops (not desktops) it really isn't that bad.

I decided against it, i already have a decent enough media laptop and it will do me fine until we get our own place and i can re-build my PC with a complete water-cooling system. But when my laptop finally reaches its end of life i will definitely replace it with a m17x.

Ha, I really need to start reading threads more. If I knew it was a laptop then I wouldn't have said what I did before.

    So I'll rephrase...

you see, the life of a laptop is shorter than a pc's life

I've seen friends have laptops who almost all blew after 2 years
in 2 years, 4 GB Ram will still be enough, and if you're lucky to have the laptop for 4 years, ok get 6 GB ram just to be on the safe side, but 16? How much you pay extra to have those 16 GB? You think it's worth it?

The lifespan of a PC or laptop is solely dependent on how you treat it and how you use it. It would be ignorant to say that a laptop has a shorter life than a PC does.

You don't know what he's using it for, you really have no right to tell him that the amount of RAM he has chosen will not suit his intended purpose. Additionally, unless the motherboard supports triple channel, having 6GB of RAM is not viable.

Lets not forget that unlike the home PC you built yourself, your laptop has a full 1 year warranty or more if you purchased extended warranty. If there are an issues with the laptop, the parts will be replaced. So if he has 3 years of warranty and after 2.5 years needs a motherboard and GPU replacement, then when his warranty finally run out, the parts will only be 6 months old. This basically ensures that it will last another 2-3 years.

If we were talking about Alienware desktops then by all means start pointing out flaws, but we're talking about replacing a gaming PC with a gaming laptop. There is no cheap option to take, you either fork out the big bucks or you put up with inferior performance.

where in the US will you be? oh boy oh boy oh boy :)

    Ron,
Financing is a bad idea, you'll end up paying more in interest than you would as a lump sum, so if you have the money get it all at once. If you are a TRUE gamer don't buy a 'gaming laptop' there is no such thing, none can compare to a desktop and be cheap. closest thing I've seen to that is the falcon northwest frag box and that's a mini desktop.

Pretty much agree, its decent gear but I think you could find something the same for cheaper. ;)
Ever thought about pricing your own pc build? (unless you wish a laptop) which i can search for a decent one, what spec's would you desire?

    Re: Alienware m17x - Thoughts?

I guess I didn't really clarify my intentions on getting a laptop.

I'm never at home. I'm either at school, sleeping at home, or on the move going to peoples' houses for PC repair. A lot of the time is just waiting for clients to get home since I like to be there earlier than planned.

That said, homework needs to be done. I can't do it at home so I need to do it between working. My homework consists of running virtual machines emulating various PC and network problems. I need the laptop to run 3 different VM's and have everything run smooth enough to load up other applications on the host OS. I could do it at school with physical computers but I can't afford to spent extra time there.

I also do a lot of custom modding for private servers, which I need to run the server and client to test changes for. Extra memory never hurts with that. I'm going for a "gaming" laptop so the games I work on actually look nice lol.

Building a PC isn't an option, I need to be mobile.

I'd rather finance it because it works in my budget. I can't afford to fork over 4 grand at one time.

The extra ram doesn't cost a whole lot more. Laptops by no means have shorter lifespans. My father still has his laptop he bought in 04. My little brothers constantly use it but it still works as good as the day he bought it.

oh there we go, now I understand. You may have mentioned it before Ron but I only skimmed through.

    ASUS G73JW-A1 Laptop Computer - Intel Core i7-740QM 1.73GHz, 8GB DDR3, 1TB HDD, Blu-ray Player/DVDRW, 17.3 Full HD, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Black, 2-Year Warranty / 1-Year Accidental Damage at TigerDirect.com

$1600 and has specs like my desktop lol. it has decent RAM but I cannot confirm if it's tri-channel or not, which you need with an i7; dual channel and single channel are practically the same speed

Personally I'll get two computers.one lightweight one for on the move work and a powerful but heavy one which you can like leave it in the car when you don't need it. Out simply is a chore to lug that heavy piece of metal when all you need is to check google for stuff.
