I am quite sure that 2x 9800GTX2's is still a normal SLI since they are technically each only 1 board still.

In some situations only. Alot of the time the 4870X2 will beat the 3 280GT's... Keep in mind that the only difference is that 3 280GT's have more RAM, yet the 2 4870X2's have faster RAM with more shaders.

If I'm not mistaken 9800 use the same chipset as an 8800 so there is hardly any performance increase between them.
It says that it has 2 GPU's in one card, so it would be quad.

If you want 4 GPU Processors:

    SLI GeForce9800GX2 (GeForce9800GX2 contains 2 processors inside so 2x2=4 gpu :D)

9800 has DDR3 stuff in it and 8800 has DDR2. but yeah it doesn't really feel like it's uber :(

Keep in mind SLI = roughly 40% performance increase, while Crossfire = up to 80% increase.
yeah but that is the point - while ATI have 2 GPU's he ( the author of chart) compared to sli to have fair fight - 2 GPU's versus 2 GPU's. And yeah if you have small monitor then its useless to have SLI or Crossfire. and yeah - even if ATI is stronger nVidia have more fans and when nVidia will strike back ATI will fall... hard... (ouch)

the thing is far as im aware ati have support for 4 gpu's where the most nvidia can handle is 3 (and even thats shakey) so i'd go with dual 4870x2 if i was willing to pay out that much money

Nvidia cards can use QUAD SLI but only on Vista. Attempting it on XP will just not work. Max on XP is dual/tri SLI depending on the cards.
