    camcorder advice, around £250

Hi guys just wondering if anyone has any input on a decent camcorder I could get to film myself doing various martial arts and training videos to post on youtube.

I've been looking at a few different ones but I'm a complete noob. I found the Samsung hmx h200 for under £200 but I could go to around £250 if there is a better one.

I just need something where the quality will be ok but most importantly that the video is smooth with the fast movements and all.

You could spend a bit more and probably get a dslr camera with ability to record video. But I assume you live in UK so I have no idea if those are more expensive there.
But I had canon t1i, it was great even tho only support 720p.

Now there is t3i for $600 at local store in my area. Great camera and shoots awesome video.

The first proper sports DSLR camera would be the Canon 550D, it's able to record at 60FPS at 720p. 550D's cost a whole lot more, though very much worth it (even though I shoot Nikon)

The camera you've chosen is a really nice 1 Exy, I've looked around to find something better, but this 1 really stands out among the rest in the same price class due to it's 60 fps at 720p, which is of course very important with sports. It also gives you a lot of room with editing, say you want to put something in slow motion, the 60p will allow you to half the fps and still have a good fps and with slow motion software (which will create a frame for example between each frame based on the data from the 1 before and after) for ultra slow motion without it looking cheap.

The 1080 function would however be completely useless for sports, for all sorts of other stuff it would be fine, but for sports you want that 720p/60fps function.

Btw Exy, check the RaGEPARTY forum. ;)

I suggest you to buy DSLR. Maybe Nikon D700. It's the best for me :)

cheers bro, I really think 720p will be more than enough quality for my personal training videos and any I put onto youtube, I really think I'll be getting this cam soon now :D

Will check party section now ;)

Nothing stops you from saving up for a bit longer. I don't know about UK but here in US you can get like a credit card for that, but again I don't know about UK.

First of all a D700 can't record videos. Second it costs 1850 euro for the body alone.
I'm guessing you mean the Nikon D7000. I actually bought this camera yesterday, costed me with a grip and all 1300 euro, this is still without a lens.
On top of that the D7000 is limited in FPS, going only 24fps. Not to mention that DSLR's are hardly video camera's, sure you can get great quality with them, but I wouldn't recommend a DSLR for someone who wants to make videos.

It will, 720p looks excellent and with that 60fps you will be able to really capture all the moves.
Going 60fps at 1080p would cost you a whole lot more as it would require you to get a more professional camera.

Btw I would strongly advice you to get a Gorilla pod aside from a regular Tripod. Gorilla pods allows you to place a camera pretty much anywhere, not to mention that they are extremely light weight and thus easy to take with you. I use 1 for my DSLR and it's 1 of the best things I've bought. You should be able to pick up a regular model for about 25-30 quid.

You are advicing him to get a credit card (which he has btw, I believe pretty much everyone has 1 in the UK) to buy a expensive camera from money he does not have?
While more expensive equipment usually means better quality, advicing a DSLR is a bad idea and on top of that his videos will be about him showing off stuff while the camera is mostly on a tripod (or at least I assume so), you won't need a really expensive camera for that, if the image is good, the sound is crisp and it has enough fps then it's all down to him to make the video good.

Like most professionals say, if you can't make a good video with a relatively cheap camera, then you won't make a good video with a expensive camera.

Well, not really and kinda yes. But it all depends on how economy works in UK. Here I earn 2200+ a month. Canon T3i (which I love and the one I prefer) costs only $600 (body only). I am pretty sure I can come up with 100-200 bucks now and then every month 50-100 bucks. But yet with this I get pretty damn good camera (somewhat pro level) plus a video recording device.

But again, this is just me and this would work for me better if I needed a camcorder.

I am not going to say small camcorders are bad, I had flip, samsung and hd pro. All of them are awesome as well.

Yeah, I mean D7000. Lol typo there. I'm currently make a video for my teachers day and using DSLR. For me, DSLR is the best and I'm on my way to upgrading my DSLR :)

DSLR's are not the best for video.

The 600D (T3i) costs here 750 euro with the 18-55 kitlens, that's way over his budget. Whether or not you think that's worth it or affordable, is up to you, but that's not what he was asking.

You can always suggest something more expensive if it's not that much more, but the difference here is huge, you're advising something that costs 3 times as much as his current choice. That's like trying to sell a Mercedes to someone who came looking for a Peugeot.

As for it working better, with the proper lenses and all the 600D can offer better quality, but you have to understand what is needed. For example you absolutely need a external mic if you want to use autofocus on your DSLR, the sound of the lens focusing is very noticeable, on top of that the focus of a DSLR is really slow. Of course this does depend on the lens, my prime focuses a lot faster and makes less noise.
Then there is the lens itself, the videocam starts at F1.8, this requires a prime, which aside from costing money, has some issues while recording, like having no zoom at all and they use a longer focal length, so you will be at 2x zoom in comparison with a regular lens. On top of that, if you are just recording and want to zoom in, then this will not be possible.

A DSLR is also a lot heavier and not as easy to carry, like I said I got a D7000 with grip and a 18-200, that's like 1600 gram, that cam is 272 gram, not to mention that it's build for recording videos while the DSLR is made to carried around your neck or shoulder or in a bag most of the time.

Now some of this will not be that relevant for him for the purposes he mentioned right now, but knowing him, he will be carrying around this baby for say a RaGEPARTY and such things will be relevant.

All in all a DSLR is really nice for making videos, but if you are not interested in high quality photography or at least recording video is the most important thing, then you are better of with a video camera and possibly get a cheap second hand DSLR
