    CPU Upgrade

    E8400 or Q6600

I've had a look on the net and I have mixed feelings now.
The E8400 is one hell of an overclocker, but the Q6600 has the advantage of 2 extra cores.
I'm planning on oc'ing the quad to 3Ghz+, depends on how far it'll go.
So it would be an 3,6Ghz~ dual core vs 3Ghz~quad ish.

    Your opinions on this ?

P.S. I'm getting another 8800gts 512mb and SLI it with my current gts, do the 2 extra cores have any influence on the SLI scaling ?

    Ermmm, thats a tough one.
depends if you do alot of multi tasking and playing games that will use the full quad core. If you was goin quad core get the Q9000 series.

    Re: CPU Upgrade

My budget for cpu is about €150.
The E8400 is like €138 and the Q6600 is €143.

I do know that not all games support all the 4 cores, but it sure is future proof.
It would be even more future proof if I oc'ed it to 3Ghz, somewhere near 3,4 if im lucky.

    Re: CPU Upgrade

Even if the game doesn't use four cores, the performance impact is minimal in games between the two, compared to the fact that you're paying €5 for two extra cores.

3fps extra or pretty much an extra processor for €5, your choice ;)

I'm currently leaning towards the Q6600.

    Re: CPU Upgrade

dosnt make a difference i wouldn't of thought. Never had SLi and never had a quad core.
I wud go quad rather then duel, as it will perform better in newer games and programs.

why would you get 3 gtx280's 2 is freaking overkill theres no memory/cpu setup that can even process that much information between the gpu =s

That's because transferring data like that isn't left up to the CPU/Memory, that my friend is what we call a Southbridge.

You can still have bottlenecks. The 8800GTX is bottlenecked by a Q6600 until you hit about 3.4Ghz

As for SLI scaling, if anything it will help with it, due to the above.

    Re: CPU Upgrade

So I've decided on the Q6600.
I have a 650w psu with a total of 40A on the rails.
    Will this be enough for a Q6600,4gb ddr2 1066 and 8800gts (g92) sli ?
Is there any room for overclocking with this psu ?

    Re: CPU Upgrade

That should be fine. As for overclocking, as long as it's a decent powersupply you should be fine.

    Re: CPU Upgrade

Ehm for as far I know there's no other difference between the E6800 and the X6800 then the unlocked multiplier.
So unless you're going to oc the hell out of it I wouldn't get it if I were you.
Don't know about the price though, those things are damn expensive anyways.

    Re: CPU Upgrade

That powersupply isn't that good. It only has dual +12v rails instead of quad, and 80mm fans, which as we all know equals the equivalent of a jet engine taking off in your case. Take a look at the OCZ StealthXtream or the GameXtream series

Also yes, the extreme processors are for elite overclocking enthusiasts, 5x the cost for an unlocked multiplier.

But is it enough to run that setup atm ?

It should be, but I still strongly recommend you get a different one.

About the powersupply, have you ever checked how much power your computer is _really_ using? (With a thing plugged in between your computer and the wall). My computer (Intel E4500 @ 3,2Ghz and an overclocked HD3850 512Mb and 4 HDDs) never ever ever goes past 200w how much I try! So like 17A one a +12V railwould, in theory, be enough.

Decided to get this PSU with it on Mazo's recommendation: http://www.ocztechnology.com/product...dia_sli_ready_ (700w version)

No chance that is accurate. You'd need a lot of VERY expensive equipment to properly test it.

    Re: CPU Upgrade

I don't know how much it costed, borrowed it from a friend. Anyhow I'm running that setup on the cheapest 400w powersupply I could find and it works great, even with an extra HDD installed.

    Re: CPU Upgrade

I use a program called PSU calculator to determine the PSU to get. Get a PSU whitch is over 50watts of what ur system is to make sure.
