    Data Recovery?

One of my 300gb HDD's failed somehow last night, now it just says its unaccessible and is probably corrupted... Seen a few data recovery programs but not too keen on trying em out till i know more about em. So anyone used any before? How did they go?

Spinrite is one tool that does exceptionally well at it's job. You should give it a shot.

i think it's what i needed... i dropped one of my HDs by accident and something inside got broken. now it makes strange sounds and is almost unaccessible. i still would like to get inside since almost my whole music is there.

    Re: Data Recovery?

If you've abandoned all hopes of recovering the OS and just need some files off the drive, you could also just use a distro of Linux that boots without installation (Ubuntu, Knoppix, etc.)

    Re: Data Recovery?

I've used Steller or something like that and it works great. Takes about 8 hours to scan a 250gb drive but it does a good job at recovering files from it if it can be accessed.

If not then you can try some forensics tools like Helix (free) to recover some files but if the drive is unusable then you have no hope.

    Re: Data Recovery?

WoW 8 hours... finally got it done and it only took an hour and 20 mins to scan my entire 300gb HDD (and it was a complete search, not a quick one). But yea got back all of my data so i is good.

Had some power problem at my house the power turned off then on while i was fixing comp (and i admittedly completely forgot to turn the PSU off), so the surge (literally) killed 3 of my 6 sata ports on my mobo and fucked up my 4th HDD (which i now can't use since my mobo now only supports 3 sata connections). Time for new mobo >.<

If somethings broken you have to send it out. which is costly

    Re: Data Recovery?

Damnit i really have no idea, i torrented a 15-in-1 data recovery AIO (from isohunt) and installed about 8/9 of them... uninstalled them all now so wont have a clue which one worked and which didn't.

But if the drive is not accessible, yet it still shows up in my computer, format the drive first so it can be read, then use a file recovery program. I recovered 100% of my data.

Yeah... You didn't use a comprehensive bit-by-bit search of your HDD. That is why it was done so quick. :1:

But as long as you got it done, that is what matters.

Also ever heard of a surge protector? Works wonders in keeping your equipment alive...

if ur hdd is broken there is no chance of recovering data from it as somthing has broken off which is needed to make the hdd to work...

you could try and find a person to remove the disk plates and recover of them but i think that could be very costly...

It is I looked into having it done with my hard drive with about 15K songs on it The Lab wanted like some triple digit number per hour with no guarantee they could get it back. It took less to torrent that stuff back then to mess with them.

    Re: Data Recovery?

how come other countrys have power serge problems here in the uk my system is always been to the mains and never had any sort of serges before...

it could be that we use 3 pins with the 3rd wire being earthed so the fuse normaly explodes before your system does or that we have a different power grid as we run @ 50hz?

i sucked @ physics so care to explain anyone?

    Re: Data Recovery?

I'm sure that somewhere in the UK someone has experience a power surge and fried a component or two, what your describing is just good luck so far.

    Re: Data Recovery?

No, surges occur when the power lines get struck my lightening or something... so i asume that hasn't happened to you.

Also ffs read i just said i surged it using my mobo, has nothing to do with my surge protector.
