    You need to learn to program. Check the coders paradise section.

    As tedelex06 said, Visual Basic would be good to start with because imo it has a pretty good syntax.

    Visual Basic - small tasks
    C++ - big tasks

    Nonononono, Visualbasic = Very bad. I would suggest php to get familiar with the basic syntax and than move on to C or something.

    He speaks the truth.
    I wish I learnt PHP before C++. Would've grasped C++ so much quicker and easier.

    Well, if he want for example a simple download center as he said then it would be ok to do in Visual Basic.

    He said: "like just little basic ones like a download center or something like that ..".
    Little basic ones - why use C++ ?
    Yes, i know C++ is pretty good, i know it myself but, I hope you see the point that instead of thousands line of C++ then rather just 30-40 lines Visual Basic.
    Visual Basic suck yeah, but would a little simple program lag? not really.
    But of course, moving on to bigger tasks that would lag then C++ would be good.

    Well I don't get why you would want to make a download center in VB in the first place... Isn't a download center a web application? Which would mean it'd be 1000x times easier to make it in php than in VB

    Visual Basic or VB.Net is a decent language to start off with because it does some snazzy things but with a whole load of unneccessary code. It doesn't open up many doors in the world of coding, so something like PHP is a good start ^_^

    As much as I hate to agree with anyone... Especially Pieman, he's right. :/
    PHP would be much better for beginners, and it's not really constrained to web applications.

    PHP can be used, for example, to make an IRC bot, or... HTTP server if you will.
    Sure, it's slow. But it's easy and that's the whole point here, isn't it?

    So yeah, I suggest PHP.

    Why learn BASIC, then go to do Visual BASIC? That's stupid.

    Learning BASIC makes you automatically forfeit any and all chances of becoming a real programmer.

    didnt saw your answer..
    What about ASM ? X'D
    Quite easy and it's the most powerfull on rapidity/perfs mainly becoz it's the lowest level programming language ? :P

    I've never tried ASM, but from what I've heard, it takes way too much time to code.

    Re: [General] Program making

    Imho, C++ is the wrong choice when starting from zero, of course there's hardly anything you can't do, but it's extremely hard to learn if you have no idea about object oriented programming, memory management etc.

    Even though I don't like Visual Basic, maybe it isn't too bad to start with. Basic is an easy and fast to learn language, and it's much easier to understand if you don't have ANY programming knowledge, like, what variables are and so on.
    (Also, I'd say he soon wants to start with GUI programming, like most of the people who want to learn coding). If this is the case, I'd say try out Visual Basic / Delphi.

    If you're ready to spend some time and really learn the basics WITHOUT graphical user interfaces (console ftw), then you might want to check out Java / C (++).

    Oh, nearly forgot about PHP. I'm learning PHP at the moment, would be a nice choice for starting I think. (ok there are some things to think about: you need a webserver (not a problem, there's XAMPP and stuff) also, you probably have to learn HTML too, which isnt too hard though).

    Short form:

    If you want:

    - Start quickly with normal looking GUI-Apps and startable .exe file
    --> Visual Basic, Delphi

    - learn the real basics of programming (maybe 1 year only console)
    --> whatever you prefer

    Personally, I started with QBasic, then Delphi / Visual Basic,
    afterwards C , then Java (at school / education)
    now C# / PHP (and basics of C++) (free time)

    I have to say that I started at the age of 11 I think and I wanted to write GUI-Apps of course ;)
    If I had to start from the scratch again, I would choose C for the basics, then C# / PHP for the rest

    ASM is usually a choice for people who want complete control over their code. It is probably the best language to choose for optimizations. Plus I've known it to have broke a few 'programming' rules too, such as memory allocating and threading.

    Some bad things about ASM:
    Long and tedious to write code. Your code can be quite difficult to understand.
    Whatever the result, it's non-portable to different architectures.
    A small change in the algorithmic design can render you're previous-written code useless, as it would need to be re-written.

    So on that note, go for something a tad easier to comprehend and use.
    Perl's a pretty good language to learn, although I'm still in the proccess of learning it... One thing is the syntax is pretty awful compared to languages like Python.
