Help Buying/Building a Gaming PC.

Hai. Well Im in a pridiciment :P Im on a laptop with a fucked up HD that runs like poopy cause of it. until i take it in next week. further more. i need a PC i have No clue on a budget, I have been told, Custom building them your self is much cheaper. But where to begin. where to even look for prebuilt?

I need help badly for a PC, playing games like AoC on a laptop. would not fare well for me. and i need a PC anyway. BUUUUT. Im not going to tell ma dad about this.

He will go "You should be saving your money blah blah blah," I am saving it. For a Desktop. :D

Cody we need a budget, else there really aiint anything we can do. PC's can be as cheap as $300 and go up to over $5,000. Surely you know how much money you have or are willing ot spend? Also list exactly what you will be doing with it so we can suggest one which will best suit your needs.

id have to say no more then 800$? mabey 1k my dad will have a bitch fit about it. but the funny thing is, its not his money :] I might be able to make bout 800 this summer where i work. i could also just ask for more hours and do it that way. 1k tops. ill need it for gaming. and heavy web building. this laptop doesnt cut it.

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-MA790FX-DS5 AM2+ MOBO (could use a cheaper one would need to be changed for nvidia sli setup)
Ram: Corsair TwinX 2GB DDR2 6400 C4
Graphics card: HD3650 or 9600 GT (9600 is more expensive option will definatly be worthwhile)
PSU: 550W XCLIO X14P3S4 PSU
Hard drive: 500GB SAMSUNG SATA2 HD501LJ
O/S: windows vista 64 bit

All of this will work fine together as im currently using it myself price it up for yourself but it should be under $900

if not those will do some damage to your budget.

also am2 is fail

decide what size monitor you need (not want, need) say 19" moving from a laptop, thats a great improvement.

most 19" screens are 1280x1024 resolution, if you plan on playing AOC on that you need a beefier cpu and gpu or if you plan to overclock then youll need a better psu.

and building a computer may not be cheaper but its better value - you get the components you want and that may perform better, not the half baked cut down oem contract parts.

Umm... When do you plan on buying it? If it's in a few months then don't bother asking. AMD and nVidia are releasing their new lines in 2-3 weeks along with Intel dropping prices in a month to make more room for new lines. Don't know about AMD CPUs though.

800$ max for the cpu tower stuff and the other 200will go to the monitor and keybord and accessories. and yeah, i do have a mouse. a wireless one. ftw so a max of 1k.

My brother is using an Am2 4600+ and from what we have seen, it goes no slower than my oc/d e6600.

On a side note, would a 4600+ be slower or faster than the slowest c2d (E2160)? Needing to build an extreme budget PC tomorrow as a spare and still aiint decided on amd/intel.

2Gb kingston ram, 4600+/E2160, cheap intel mobo, 8600GT, 430W Tt PSU, and a 320GB sata drive. All for... $400 AUD ($350 usd?). My brother uses a similar setup and has been using it for about a year now, it works absolutely fine, no lagging as far as we can see.

I agree that there is nothing wrong with the Athlon X2 chips. I have a 4800+ s939 and it's still a strong CPU after all these years. It keeps up with a 2.0ghz Conroe and is rock solid stable.

Though in all honesty the Athlon X2 chips should be avoided simply because you can get better Intel chips for less. Look at the Conroe L series chips running the Allendale and Conroe cores. A dual core 2.0ghz one only costs you $50 and it's faster then most other chips.

Also I wouldn't suggest an 8600 GT. You can get a 7600 GT for less and it's actually faster. Makes no real since on getting that chip. Even still if you want to game then you shouldn't go lower then a $150 9600 GT.

A suitable gaming computer would be (and recommended) Windows Vista Ultimate x32. Here is a list of good specs.

1) Intel Dual Core
2) 160GB Computer Space
3) 1GB RAM
4) A good, 17" or 19" screen

2. 1gb RAM for Vista? 2gb is MINIMUM. Also i would highly suggest NOT to buy 32x Vista, if you are going to invest hundreds of dollars into it, get 64x.

And recommending him Hard disk and screen size is just stupid, i think he can decide for himself how much space he needs and how big he wants his screen.

Vista 64x has better driver compatibility, it apparently has less problems, and it lets you have more than 3.5gb or RAM.
