Pretty sure x64 Windows 7 Ultimate can handle quite a few GBs.

Windows 7 can handle more RAM than you can physically put into a home desktop PC, and more than it can ever use.
With 8GB of RAM you can effectively turn Pagefile off because you won't be using that much RAM like, ever. So with 16, 32, 64GB... It's so people can brag, that's about it. Only a very small pertentage actually have a use for it.
Dell knows people love to have bigger e-peens, which is why they charge $1,000 for their 16GB RAM Alienware upgrades. Because just like the OP has clearly shown us, some people start salivating at the thought of all that RAM and think it justifies doubling the price.
Alienware's high end upgrades are plain outrageous it's irritating how they charge 2.000 bucks for 32 GB Ram in a laptop! for 2000 bucks you could get a desktop with 32 GB Ram and high end CPU, high end Graphic card and a big hard drive with money to spare
Uses for 16+ GB Ram :
- RAM Disk : Makes a virtual Hard drive that effectively runs on RAM which boosts whatever is in it to beyond SSD speeds for near 0 loading times on games or software
- Virtualization for developers
- 3D modelling and rendering
- To use as a server
other than that it's just standing idle, personally I only ever reached 6 GB of Ram consumption at once while working
i have 16gb on my gaming pc & my server
Server is pretty much useless.
My brother is running a server with 4, it's a dual atom 1.6, has 10 HDD's in it (8x2TB raid 6, 2x 80GB 2.5inch raid 0), hosts the network of about 25 local and virtual network computers including 4 servers.
Very few personal servers have this kind of traffic, yet it runs on pretty much jack shit.
Personally I would advice to get 16GB now if you build a gaming PC, even if you don't need 8 of it yet, the fact is that it's so cheap, that it's too good to pass up. The extra memory definitely doesn't hurt for such prices.
and this laptop is pretty ugly IMHO lol
If your Windows is 32bits, then it can't handle more than 8GB.
This is a great PC tho, even when people says that it's worthless.
This should be moved to the tech zone btw.
You can use 192 GB Ram on a 32 bit system by utilising a kernel hack that forces PAE to work, even enabling PAE /force doesn't actually allow more than 4 GB because there's an inbuilt cap to prevent using more than 4 GB Ram in a 32bit system, but the kernel hack only unlocks more total Ram, applications still can only run 2 GB (3 GB with some settings) Ram each and 64 bit applications still can't run.
At least you can run multiple applications that total to more of 4 GB Ram Usage
Gonna move this to tech zone if everyone's okay with that...
I'm cool with it.
And lol at 16GB RAM. Enjoy your overkill.
