How can I get more bandwidth in my home connection?

My brother's always downloading lol, using uTorrent, so he sucks all my bandwidth up, and I wanna use mine to play Dota 2, but it's kind of pissing me off when I have 140 ping...

I tried a bit of googling but all the explanations were vague. Help a brotha out Thanks

Best way communicate with him, saying your game is making you lag, ask him nicely to set up scheduled downloading that starts after the time you usually finish playing your games.

If you mean, your internet is being shaped because his downloading too much data over the quote, then there isn't much you can do aside from tell him he has limits, or upgrade your allowable quote.

Might also help if you told people what modem/router you have so someone might have a back end solution. Do you have access to his machine? Would he allow software (that limits the rate of the bandwidth) to be installed on the computer?

If your modem has any Qos or Quality of Service features you can set it to give each PC an even shared amount of the bandwidth. So even if he's maxing it out he's still only using 1/2 of your total bandwidth leaving your 1/2 untouched.

QoS can be either on your modem/router or on a client you run on all PC's or a service you run off a server. Depends on your setup.

He can also limit his bandwith usage in UTorrent to only use say 200kb/s for example...it would take longer to download though.

How To Easily Set Up Router QoS for VoIP, File Sharing, and Gaming - Tested

    i just googled. -_-

if you dont have access to that stuff then you nest have a chat with your bother, and allicate times for downloads, such as when your sleeping.

if both those are not able to be done, you best stop complaining about free internet.

I believe some Virtual Private Networks decrease your download and upload usage quite a lot, HotSpot Shield being one.
HotSpot Shield is absolutely TERRIBLE with ads if you're using the free version, but I'd recommend looking into some VPNs that actually do decrease the download/upload usage. CyberGhost is a great VPN client, but I'm not too sure on the usage part.

Just do some research. Or, in the uTorrent client you can limit the usage per second. It's set to unlimited by default, but is easily editable.

Oh, and I'd suggest he gets the VPN, not yourself, for obvious reasons; Considering you'll be playing Dota 2.
    Good luck.

Why wold you use a VPN just to throttle your speeds when you can simply right-click the uTorrent system tray icon & select both the max download & upload?

Well, if you read it all you'd know I already said that in the same post.

Oh i know, i read it all. My question is why mention the VPN AT ALL if you're going to give a much easier alternative which they have a much higher chance of ACTUALLY doing?

That's like giving them a 10-page guide on "how to build a dog kennel" and then afterwards giving them the option of just going to the store & buying one. Well duh which one do you think they'll actually do? That's like telling someone to burn an image to a CD/DVD and mail it rather than uploading it to a site or simply attaching it to an email.

Why mention something which is 10x harder when there are several options which are both faster & easier?
