    I want faster internet.

    Hello all,

My current download speed from e.x FileFront lays around 400~500kB/s.
I'm downloading alot, and I want to get the speed up.

    First off:
My dad bought my current, and he/I do(es)n't know the exact name of it and all the specs.
Recently I've been checking out a site called TweakDSL.nl , it's in dutch fyi.
    --
    12-24 Mbit/1Mbit
    €39.95/month
    --
I'm not really smart at this
So that'd mean my download speed is (max.) 12Mbit ?
And surely higher then my current?

    Another one:
    4-12 Mbit/1Mbit
    €29.95/month

    So, I need some advice.

    ~EliteGM.

    EDIT:
    Found some stuff out:
    Hostname: <censor>.speed.planet.nl
    ISP: Planet Technologies
    Organization: Planet Technologies
    Proxy: None detected
    Type: Cable/DSL

    At http://www.kpn.com/internet/providers.htm I see 3Mb/s for €20,- that's a difference.. right ?

    Re: I want faster internet.

Just because your paying for example, a 100mb plan, doesnt mean you will connect at that speed.

Lots of things interfere with the speed, such as noise on the line, quality of the line and distance from broadband exchange.

Your download rate is /8 of your connection speed, so if your connection speed is 5mb/s, your estimated download rate is 625kb/s

    Re: I want faster internet.

If I hover about the Internet Connection thing, it says: 'Speed: 54,0 Mbps'.
    So.. that /8 = 6,75 DownSpeed ?

On speedtest.net I pick the advised server:

From A'dam isn't that much different.
But TweakDSL stated: Down/UP: 12Mbps/24Mbps, so they don't mean connection speed, right ?

    Re: I want faster internet.

generally its actually 10% of your actual connection ; ie. 54mb line will give you 5.4mb download speed max ONLY FROM THE ISP TO YOU - anythign else they do NOT guarantee and you cannot expect to get a speed even remotely close ot that.

    You're spoilt, omg =|

I'm stuck with up to 200+kb/s, average 100kb, download speeds.

    No.

Cable has an overall higher speed than ADSL, HOWEVER you share your connection with everyone else who is on cable in your area. ie ; if your area gets 5000kbps and there are 10 people using cable, you recieve only 500kbps.

I am on cable and get extremely high speeds (on a 17mb line) during the weekends and holidays, yet i receive shit speeds during the weekdays cos i live 50 meters away from a major high school who shares my cable.

    Re: I want faster internet.

    :) i have cable internet . . . 20mb/s down 2mb/s Up...... *limit
    (Speedtest) . . .

Anyways fastest I ever usually Download is 2 to 3 Mb/s which I think personally is fairly good...

It depends on a lot of things
    1) Condition of the lines in your area.
    2) How many people are using the line provided for your area.
    3) The hardware you have hooked up to your modem.
    ...
500 kb/s is a fair connection and pretty damn good if your on DSL.

If you ever purchased a 100mb/s line and only have one computer . . . the theoretical maximum you could achieve is probably around 20 - 30 mb/s Down to one computer and the full up speed of your upstream connection....

I would say a 100mb/s FIOS link for example would be great if you where hosting something like a private game server... website... or if you have a lot of users in your home . . .

Why 20 - 30 mb/s? well most common sata drives today can only read /write around 30 - 60mb/s to the physical disc.

Ram and cache come into play etc... but realistically its not to be expected to get over 10 - 18mb/s for most connections...even Fios.

I am not sure exactly how they still do things but I remember back in the day, the way the company like Timewarner would allocate bandwidth to you would to essentially dedicate a certain portion of the total bandwidth pie of your area to you *Essentially your fare share* now if there are 1000 users in your area you kinda get jipped because someone paying the same amount as you with less users to share there bandwidth with in there local area will have more available bandwidth than you... thats where premium service comes into play where you pay more than the normal price to get more bandwith allocated to you.... so that your connection takes priority over others in your area... kinda sucks but thats best way i know how to describe it.

Um, your kind of right. I think you ment to say "Cable doesnt loose speed over distance, where as ADSL does."

of course cable looses speed over distance, why wouldn't it? fiber optics wont, but cable will.
