Don't turn them off. Leave them to update themselve. Some of the update/hotfixes have important security patches for viruses.
there are no patches for viruses :)
i personally try to manually download all the updates to have some control over what gets installed.
there are sites out there that list all the awailable updates for various windowses
It's not good for your computer to disable updates. (Mostly, for XP aswell). If you disable Windows Updates, your computer won't be up-to-date and eventually many viruses may attack your system. But it doesn't matter if you change it to the non-recommended setting, as long as Windows Updates are enabled.
AVG bitch ;] Enough said. and the fact im getting a new HD in 3 weeks id like to say mabey 2? doesnt make much difference xD. Plus they take up so much damn space ;l
Do what I do. Every Tuesday install the damn MS updates... You should always update your software to fix bugs and security holes.

I have had them turned off for about 3 months now, I'm sick of it wasting half my bandwidth allowance to auto-install the updates, I only get 2gb of bandwidth and it gets annoying after 15 days or so it goes to like worse then dial-up speed, I don't even download music any more on my home computer, I use it for school, IM, and just forum visiting, I try to minimise as much stuff that I view, I even have avatars & signatures turned off, not sure if it helps a lot but my net usually lasts for about 25 days then starts to get slow. The only downloading I do now is at school since they have really fast net speeds and a lot of bandwidth.
Yeah, only if you don't keep current with them. It's only a few MB every week if you keep up to date with them.
In all honesty it's no big deal. They download in the background using only a fraction of your bandwidth and auto install as you shut down the system.

Well within 3 weeks i went from 85gb to 74, without downloading anything. Could this be cause my HardDrive is fucked up?
do you have system restore enabled ?
Well,
Id say it is pretty bad,
Just have it go at like 5 am =]
Ussally when your up that late your just like fck im going to bed anyway
Umm.... Don't know why that happened. If SP1 was auto installed then it would have went down by about 1-2gb but that's if you are running a 64-bit version. 32-bit would have been less as 32-bit code is smaller.
You probably have other things happening there. Also make sure you disable Shadow Copies as that takes up a lot of space quickly if a lot of files are being changed on your system.
