Is there any ways to improve lifespan of a PC

Hello everyone, i was wondering that everytime we used our Personal Computer(PC). We do not really care about what is happening in our PC. Our PC might die suddenly due to poor management. We cannot predict what will happen.

But before that happens, there should be some ways to improve the lifespan.

    1. Increasing Airflow to lengthen PC lifespan.
    2. Defragment? --> Performance or hardware wise?
    3. Overclocking or Underclocking?

    That's what i can think of. :D

Anyone have better ways to do it?

I agree with airflow, high temperatures due cause components to eventually to stop working. By having at least 2 case fans will be very good of keeping you PC cool. Make sure the thermal compound for the CPU has very good conductivity to reduce temperatures. I recommend not to overclock. De fragmentation helps as files are closer so the hard drive does less work. Clean your PC monthly from dust, as dust blocks airflow. Tie those messy wires back. TBH thats it, your PC will die still just not till a lot later with these methods.

Airflow does not do anything to reduce lifespan. On the plus side, it reduces heat. On the down side, it introduces in more dust. So its a win - lose situation.

Defragmenting may increase lifespan by a LITTLE only because by lowering the seek time it also reduces the amout the head has to move. Dont know about life span, but it will prevent it form failing alot.

Overclocking will decrease life span because its running hotter. Underclocking MAY also decrease life as it is causing more strain to maintain an un-natural clock speed. Not tested and no facts behind it, but it is a possibility.

As i saw posted, changing your thermalpaste every now and then is good to make sure it maintains constant contact with the heatsink, and cos it does get kinda bad after a year or so. In total how much time can your machine last? Well i've had an old one lying around which has been in use for about 5 years now and i bought it for the equivalent of $100 at the moment. It still runs even though i never dusted it, it uses the same thermalpaste i bought it with, and the only fan it has is on the CPU. Computers will last you for ages, mine has outlived 3 pets :P

I never care about life spans though, i change all my parts within 2 years, before they become obsolete. On average i change atleast 1 component every 6 months.

make sure your computer has good cooling and remove the dust every so often. hard disk defrag is a tricky one since the defragging itself does more headmoving action than it would in an entire year so its recomended you defrag every 4-6 months may be even less often than that.

Enter Name - where do you get your prices from ?

    http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=dfp...bw3g3&hl=en_GB

all from ebuyer - and thats goig to push some serious pixels once i overclock it to 3.4 - 3.6 ghz

ott machines by alienware, hp, voodo, vadim, scan, or any other manufacturer aren't worth it unless you have super deep pockets and not that savvy with cpu sockets and ram speed.

    p.s. overclocking - underclocking.
although you may assume that overclocking parts reduces the lifespan most cpus are made to be average mhz and then are either overclocked or underclocked by the manufacturers themselves. so the 2.4ghz q6600 is the average speed anything faster or slower is pushing the silicone.

there were some articles like 10 years ago how P3 were basically exactly the same cpu just flashed so the fsb and the multiplier are slightly different and that speed increase was directly reflected by the heat output.
now you can get some cpus which run just as cool wether they are 2.ghz or 3.ghz

if you want your cpu to live longer just leave it alone !

    Prices a rough estimates.
BTW C2D's underclock themselves when there not used depending on the motherboard.
It really makes there multiplier go from 8 to 6.
    Warranty?
Every heard of it, thats the thing that makes your PC last long as well.

Yes it will affect it. In a good way though, it will increase the lifespan.

Yes, parts are often DOA (Dead on Arrival), so if you get one, send it back.

I presume DOA would mean the CPU will not even be reconsigned by the BIOS.
Good to know C2D's have a way of increseing there lifespan :).

DOA Means it's completely dead. Non-working.

Computers will last different time periods. All depend on:
    1) How often you on the computer
    2) Quality of the components
    3) How well looked after it is (Kept clean)

Re: Is there any ways to improve lifespan of a PC

every few months clear the dust from fans/drives etc...
Dust blocks airflow and insulates causing overheating.

de-fragmenting too often can actually do more harm than good.

Format every 6 - 7 Months and re-install windows as the files reach there half life - (optimal use) windows decays over time due to Bitrot and errors/misreads and writes...
