Re: Need help upgrading my computer

Latest games such as Crysis, UT, CoD4 etc...? Won't be able to with a 939 Motherboard.

You're basically going to need a new computer and to play it without lag on medium/max is going to cost quite a bit. Start looking for:

    Motherboard - Socket AM2 or Intel 775
    Processor - AM2/Intel Core 2 Duo
    RAM - DDR2 (2GB if XP, 4 if Vista)
A Graphics Card opposed to Integrated Graphics (Go nVIDIA tbh!)

DDR2's hardly going out the door, DDR3 is way too expensive at the moment so it'd be better to get a decent motherboard than a semi-decent gigabyte one that supports DDR3 (Gigabyte do have some nice motherboards though)

I have to agree with Dandune, DDR2 is no way going out. DDR3 is also harder to find.

WHen you do that you need to get a whole new system basically. How large is your PSU? Look on the label and see what the total output is. You might also need to get a new one if it isn't large enough. Which is the case for most prebuilt PCs.

Now tell me how much you have to spend and I could configure you a setup. And also you are reusing your HDD and drives right?

    Lol @ the n00b talk.

DDR3 is actually slower then DDR2. Sure it has much higher bandwidth but the timings at which it operates is so high. Which negates the added bandwidth.

So end the end you are paying a stupidly high amount for useless RAM. It's something like 8gb of fast DDR2 for the cost of 1gb of average DDR3.

I call bull on that. Sure you won't be able to play those games at an insane high fps/resolution, but it's playable (I know it, cause I've played them here with a reasonable fps on a crappy vga).

But since it's outdated (939) you better off getting something newer (c2d/am2++). Purely by the fact it's cheaper and better (getting 939 stuff, specially over here costs u a leg).

    Newegg.com - HIPRO HP-D3057F3R ATX12V 300W Power Supply 100 - 127V/ 200 - 240V UL, CSA C22.2. IEC, EN - OEM

hmm, at first, i thought i wouldn't need a new motherboard. All i want to upgrade is my CPU, GFX Card, RAM, and a 360GB Internal HardDrive.

So my budget would be around $300+

But after what you guys said, that i need a new motherboard, and other stuff(if required)
    im guessing around $400+

Re: Need help upgrading my computer

You aiint gonna get a High end comp for that price, because you also need a new PSU, 300W just aiint gonna cut it. For a high end PC you're looking at around (don't know the exact conversion from AUD to USD, but assuming you are 1/2 ours) atleast $600 if not $700.

It's all to personal preference. Any game will run on my mother's PC that I gave her. It's a 4800+ with a 7900GTX. And at the right settings it's all playable. Though for me I couldn't use it to play Crysis as I would have to lower the settings to levels that I deem unplayable.

Not good enough you'll need to buy a new one.

Umm... Not enough for a decent gaming setup.

    CPU: $200-250
    Mobo: $150
    RAM: $100
    PSU: $75
    GPU: $150-250

Re: Need help upgrading my computer

Cheaper RAM, you won't get much extra performance out of the one you have listed

    Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail
    Newegg.com - Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail

The Corsair XMS2 PC6400 can pull 4-4-4-10 easily. That's what I have mine running at atm and I havn't even tweaked it properly.

I also suggest you swap out the mobo for a socket 775 and go with either a Core 2 Duo (E6600-E6750) or a Core 2 Quad (Q6600). That'll give you a lot of future proofing, providing you have the cash for it.

I myself do not like micro atx motherboards. Also I would have stayed with the amd, but that comes down to my personal choice.

Re: Need help upgrading my computer

    Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

I believe the P35 mobos are very stable and good for overclocking. Plus this one is cheaper than both you have mentioned. Which means if you can, go for the Q6600 and the RAM I suggested. That'll give you a lot of bang for buck.

    EDIT:

Micro ATX aren't "bad", they're just smaller than normal motherboards, which means you can fit less PCI(-e) cards in them, which can be good for large watercooling kits and such.

Re: Need help upgrading my computer

Yeah everything else seems fine to me, just remember you need an Intel socket 775 processor though. If you have any cash left over at the end you could swap out the HD3850 for an 8800GT and get better future proofing from it and quite a noticable frame rate difference.

The funny thing. That set of Crucial and the one he posted are the same. The only difference is the cost and default settings. :icon6:

    4-4-4-12 @ 800mhz is the same as 5-5-5-15 @ 1066mhz

And I've gotten that Cosair to 4-4-4-12 @ 1066 and it was pretty stable.

And for a motherboard. If you don't want to OC a quad core (by much) then get a EVGA 680i SE board as it's the best bang for your buck. Performance of a $250 board at only $150.
