Re: New gaming rig. Let me know bout these specs.

Just before anyone goes on about how epic RAID is, i really don't give a shit. I'm happy to wait 10 minutes for a level to load for all i care, as long as there's no lag when i am playing. Also, remember this is a BUDGET gaming PC, and i don't have room for fancy shit like RAID. Also, i would prefer to retain my data rather than have a drive fail ( which i have never had happen but that's not the point ).

doh, dont feel like posting here but anyway lets get some things straight:
first of the retaining data/ hd failing:
obviously what the first poster about this meant was that all hd's fail some day (regardless of raid or no raid), just that raid 1 makes a shadow copy of all data on your hd so you have an automated backup system (but only half the hd space), so it doesnt really make a difference between raid or no raid here
    as for loading times:
-not all (actionly verry few) games load all data at once, most load stuff while you're walking arround etc.
    - especialy on games with huge amounts of actions going on arround you this will be the case (mmorpg's with hundreds of ppl on one screen for example)
so this can defently be a big bottleneck in bussy area's (almost more then cpu/gpu/ram in some games)

Weeeeelllll! In that case, i will buy my one HDD, and see how i go, if im soooo epic concerned i will have to wait more than 12 seconds for something to load, im sure i will just go out and buy another drive.

Re: New gaming rig. Let me know bout these specs.

    1) You dont want to buy a GFX card with less then 512mb ram, and for nvidia cards always go for even numbered 8600,8800, ect.
1.1) Should you buy a ATI gfx card, dont expect to play age of conan as its very bugged with ati cards and you wont get maximum effect from it (VERY slow fps).
    2) You would want to buy 4 gig ram minimum (specially for crysis, aoc, ect) as they support 64 bit and can use it very effectively.
    3) I woudnt buy a AMD dual core processor, would go with Intel, you dont really want to save here as it effects high end graphics cards.
    4) I choosed to go to Vista x64 after purchasing new machine because even tho some people say it sux, i never had a crash ever, and havent had any issues with games, on my rig i run Crysis max settings DX10 at 60++ fps, age of conan max settings at 35-120 fps depending on location.
    5) 500 gig hdd's are cheap now, below 100$ for 1, and games are getting frikkin large (5-15 gig each, age of conan is like 30 gig), you should consider that even though you have a external 500 gig drive.

IF you should choose to buy a 8800 GT(x) card, be vary that the card is very LONG and NOT that many cases actually can hold them, i spend 1700 dkr (approx 315 us$) on my case (thermaltake armor+) just because its been testet by NVidia to be sli ready for 8800 cards (size, airflow ect).

Forget about raid ect, i use normal sata II hdd's, and i can transfer at 70 mb/s from hdd to hdd, i dont see that as a issue at all, my games load FAST (within seconds whatever game it is).

    Anyways, just some thoughts.

Lol, i just got a new 19" diamond view LCD monitor with DVI input so i dont need to worry bout the GFX card not having VGA anymore.

Now, you said about AoC, i'm not intending to play anyway :)

EDIT: I been thinking, whats a good SLI mobo? I think i will go for an SLI board to be future proof.

Re: New gaming rig. Let me know bout these specs.

Well, i'm completely satisfied now. I went into centrecom today and got the following quote:

    Ram
    Corsair DDR2 4GB PC-6400/800 (2x XMS2 2GB)
    Price: $101.82

    CPU
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
    Price: $195.45

    Motherboard
    Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3
    Price: $130.00

    HDD
    Seagate Barracuda 80Gb 7200RPM 8Mb SATA 2
    Price: $36.37

    GFX Card
    Sapphire HD4850 DDR3 512MB
    Price: $213.63

    Case
    Thermaltake M9 Black Midi Tower
    Price: $81.82

    Power Supply
    Gigabyte 550W
    Price: $83.64

    Optical Drive
    Pioneer DVR-215 SATA DVD Re-Writer
    Price: $29.09

    Sub-Total:
    $871.82
    Total (Inc GST):
    $959.00

So i get the quote, and am very happy with that gear. I took a bit of a leap, because the guys in the store said i would give my mobo a brown out trying to run all that gear on a 430W psu, and that i needed at least a 550W. So i go off and decide to get an epic case ( WOOO TT M9!! Looks like a freakin glowstick, and it owns! ) and a new PSU.

So I'm walking around town, and i go past my other local Chinese computer store. I walk in with my quote, all smug and happy. Until i almost shit myself because they could give me the same specs for $895. Only thing is, they didn't stock the sapphire 4850, which i really wanna get because its better for overclocking, and they use transcend memory instead. Thats no biggie, its the same speed and all, its just a "value" one. So, I'm gonna get all the shit except the GFX card at this other chinese place now, and the GFX at centrecom. So here i am, stoked, because i got a better price than what i was expecting to pay, with a better mobo psu and case. Like, SCORE! Now, to ( not be able to ) wait untill september 7th!

Thanks sooooo much for all the help guys! I LOVE YOU ALL! ( No, unfortunately not litterally. Although some of my single buddies might be interested. Lol.)

    Thanks again guys!

    @ fatslob222
Congrats on finally getting an acceptable computer build for yourself, to suit your purposes. With the new generation of hardware coming out, prices have dipped so much in the hardware market (as opposed to everything else inflating). It is such a good time to buy computer hardware. ^^

How much did you overclock your stuff? For absolutely maxed out settings, your 8800 seems to be better than two GTX280 cards in SLI ->

Seeing that you've had your old Computer for roughly 5 years.
I would reccommend you get the best bang for your buck. Even if it does mean saving.

    But that's just me

    ?
Great pick, I just got that one too with my new computer, and it just kicks ass! Way better than GT 9800. You should go with a 1TB hard drive, and possibly a E8400 intel motherboard and be sure to get 4GB RAM :D
