So i recently upgraded my pc, and i need a new GFX card after seeing how poorly my 6800 performs. I've been looking at the XFX 8600GT Extreme. I don't have a huge budget so a 8800GTX or GTS is out of the question. If i did go for an 8800GT it would only be a 256mb model. Would that be enough? The 8600 im looking at is also a 256mb
Search around I know there is some cheap 512MB cards around. What currency r u I know some places where you can get some nice gfx cards.
What resolution will you be runnign at? if its 1680x1050, the 8800gt should be good for you.. or else the 3870 at its 512
Yeh im at 1680x1050. And im in GBP. I just got myself a core 2 quad and my 6600 isnt really good enough, i tried playing UT3 and had to keep it on low settings

No, they require 6 pin PCI-E connectors. You can get molex to PCI-E 6 pin adapters though. Also the 8600 is crap, the lowest model you want to look at in the 8xxx series is the 8800GT.
Either get a GT 256mb or if you want to spend a little less then get an AMD 3750 256mb. Both cards are good for their price.

I purchased the 8600GT XXX Edition from XFX. I can still run any game.. not at max graphics of course, but most games its med-hi. Even on Crysis. I only paid 100 bucks also. I don't think its that bad of a card to be honest. Also you can overclock this card so it is better then the GTS version, and it doesn't take a 6 pin connector.
emmm... Its not better then the gts ;) You might be able to get the core clock higher then what the other cards state.. but the bandwidth, memory interface, ram speed and type, all of it is MUCH less then the GTS or 8800 GTOriginally Posted by ShadowChild

8600 gt -
8 = is the series of the card usually increasing transistor count and efficiency#
6 = the model of the card the higher it goes the more band you get more pipes texel units more clock speed, this is the important number. a 6800 gt can outperform a 8300 like theres no tommorow :)
the suffixes gt, gs, gtx, usually mean the card is modded or hacked the manufacturer made way to many of say 6600 and they need to sell them before 6800 comes out so they rebrand them overclock them unlock 1-4 pixel units and call them gs,gt,gtx and so on.
memory vs performance
i have a geforce 8800gtx it has 768 mb of gddr3 ram,
from my experience backin the geforce 6*00 days amount of ram didnot matter at all simply because you could overclock your gpu and your memory on your graphics card and your bandwidth can be considerably higher than a higher mb graphics card. having higher bandwidth mean you puch more pixels per second - mean better fps means faster than another card with more ram.
since today we do not have a serious competitor to 8800 gtx with 512 mb of ram, i cannot say that that ram doesnt matter.
but i can say this the 8800gt with 256 of ram can be overclocked and can outperform the 8800 gtx.
so kids look at the full specs of the card not just the bloody ram :)
