So what's your experience with Windows 8 so far?

##If you have not used Windows 8 yet or you've barely touched it, then don't go voicing your opinion here - I know many do not like all the changes to Windows 8, but if you haven't properly tried it out then please refrain from voicing your opinion. Feel free of course to ask whatever you want##

I've used the release preview since July and started using the full version since about 2 weeks now, my experience is based on the full version in combination of Start8 (which is a must imo).

Windows 8 in combination with Start8 is absolutely amazing. It runs extremely fast, very smooth and it feels much more refined then W7, even though W7 is already really good.
It's weird that they removed the start button, because while many criticized it to be made less for power user, my experience is the opposite, it allows quicker access to many of it's functions, clicking right in bottom left corner gives you quick access to all your major settings, all your management settings, system settings, command promt, task manager, control panel etc. This is a huge improvement over previous Windows versions.

The looks are much more clean, while previous versions were sporting a more playful look, they instead went back to a very clean interface without it making look cheap or simple, to me it feels more professional.
File explorer gives you now a ribbon like you get in Word etc, it has more options then the previous quick options and on top of that it's much easier to find and thus use.

And then of course there is the Metro interface (or however they want to call it - I'm still calling it Metro!), now it's no secret that I love the Metro interface, I have since I first saw it, I remember actually running a Windows Phone skin through SPB Shell on my Windows Mobile 6.1 phone. The interface is mostly made for touchscreen, but I find it quite easy to use with my mouse, this experience is probably less for people with a 'regular' mouse, mine has a flywheel and because you do quite a bit of scrolling, being able to scroll like that is a major plus (in all situations tbh). Furthermore the way Metro works feels right, app switching makes sense, as does closing them and going into your settings also feels right for a touch interface. For mouse and keyboard it feels awkward.

Anyway the interface looks clean and can be easily modified to your liking (assuming you like Metro), you can group apps and also name those groups.
The usefulness of it can be argued, mostly in the sense in how much time you want to spend on making it work, I use Windows Phone and thus my Windows Live holds all my contact info, agenda, email on top of that my Facebook is linked to it and of course Skype. So when I look at my start screen I can see if I got new emails, can check my calender, receive messages from MSN/FB/Skype, go through my pictures from FB and Flickr and check my files on Skydrive.
However if you don't use these services or are not connected/cleaned up like mine are, then you will probably find it not that useful and only use it to start some specifics apps/games. In my case I regularly check it because it contains a lot of the data I want on 1 screen.

All in all Windows 8 feels right with Start8, because of what Start8 offers you get a upgraded and improved Windows 7 with a second interface which in my case offers me a simple base for various information I might want.

For those who wonder what Start8 is. Start8 is a simple program that will not only just add a start button to Windows 8, but also gives you various options as to how much Metro you want. The app switching that is made for touch is still in your desktop mode, as is the charms bar, both can be disabled in desktop mode. You can also modify what buttons do, for example my start button of course shows me the traditional start menu, right clicking the button will give me the quick menu to all management options, while pressing my windows key will send me to the Metro interface.
All of this makes Start8 extremely valuable and a must have.

Re: So what's your experience with Windows 8 so far?

I enjoy using it. I was running Windows 7 64bit on the same hardware, both custom build, and my Lenovo Y570 laptop and worked well out of the box. I felt Windows 8 has better all round performance and usability once you get used to the shortcuts and where the old buttons are in the new interface it works quite well.

Metro menu - I have set my frequently used applications up and categorised them in columns/groups which work well so for me I didn't really bother with Start8 or any of third party applications. Overall I like the new menu, within a week or two I had everything set out how I liked it and learnt the shortcuts it's easy to do the normal tasks.

My only gripe with the Metro start menu (and I've had it since the start) is if there's less then five results for something, it should automatically search Settings for that keyword for example: If you search "pow" the only thing it lists is Windows Powershell which is one results (unless you have third party applications with 'pow" in the name of it). What I reckon it should do is automatically search the Settings menu if there are less then five results (and maybe depending on screen size as well), so when searching for "Pow" it'll have a menu name saying "Apps" and then list Windows Power shell, and then another menu saying "Settings" and show results like Power options, power plans etc, and if there is less then five results for those then maybe search files as well.

I know it's only a small click away on the right hand side but I think it's little refinements like these which could make it a lot better in terms of usability.

Metro applications- I haven't really taken a liking to on either my desktop or laptop, I've only installed one third party Metro application and that was TuneIn Radio (I'll put a rant at the end of the post but it's not really related to MS, more the developers of the app). I only use two 'stock' Metro applications that I use are the PDF reader & also the Mail application, just because I have about 5 Email accounts (Yahoo, Gmail, Outlook, Hotmail, Live & custom Email - though Yahoo & my custom one are linked through Gmail so it's really only the Outlook/Hotmail/Live accounts) which it's easier using the Metro app then it is to log into each account through a website, or change switch ID's through settings.

Overall I like Windows 8 a lot better then Windows 7 and I think if upgrading I will definitely be getting something with a touchscreen interface like the Surface.

    -----

TuneIn Radio rant: I love the application on Android & also there website but the Metro application is terrible. At this stage you can't login using a TuneIn radio account to view your playlists/podcasts/favourite stations list and added to you can't search stations that you want listen to!!! You basically need to sort by location, click country, click state, click category like sport/talk/music etc and then find the station you want. Another gripe about the app is the 5 dots that keep moving from left to right across the top of the window. Hopefully they get song/artist names as well and work out why it takes forever to load a radio station through Metro when it takes a second to load through the website.

Re: So what's your experience with Windows 8 so far?

I've been using Windows 8 for a while now and have purchased full version about a month ago.
At first I felt alienated by the new interface but I forced myself to use it.
Few hours later it felt more natural than Windows 7 and traditional start menu.
I tried Start8 but haven't bought it and, in matter of few days, I uninstalled it.
So far I find that Win8 Start menu is beautiful in terms of usability and more than sufficient for myself. Now I don't even run any additional software like Fences/ObjectDock from Stardock.

Indeed navigating Windows 8 with mouse alone is a pain so I suggest to anyone new to Win8 to learn at least the fundamental keyboard shortcuts (win_key + D, win_key + C and such) and learn to use them instead of clicking.

Also, I'm glad to see that Windows 8 is more secure in comparison with previous MS OSes. UAC doesn't bother me in the slightest and so for the first time ever I actually left it activated.

    Oh and the IE10 :)
Very speedy! While not going to replace my Firefox I use it frequently, especially for quick googling since the start up is almost instantaneous on SSD.

Here's screenshot of my current configuration :)
    Spoiler:

    CLEAN!

    Start menu

Re: So what's your experience with Windows 8 so far?

Been using the Release Preview since it first came out (I've been following development of W8 since the Developer Preview, but never wanted to install it). I've been running the RTM since it was released on both my School laptop and my home desktop. It's very cool since it integrates your accounts between Windows 8 PCs that you use.

Like everyone else, I felt really alienated of the new concepts, but soon after doing some research, and looking at some videos, I got used to the shortcuts that make things much easier. Overall though, I would rate W8 over W7. I wouldn't plan on switching back to W7 for any reason.

Upgrade now, before the end of the month it's 30 euro's to upgrade. Basically you can upgrade from any legal or illegal version of Vista, 7 and 8 (maybe XP as well, not sure). After that it will be 60. The code is for the pro version btw and can be used on any PC.

AJ, you are still using the release preview? Mine started showing those upgrade pop ups with it rebooting every 2 hours, don't you have that?

You can also use a random/used serial for the Windows 8 install, and then add Windows Media Center key (free here or might have to purchase for $10aud if the free promotion has ended) which will activate both. Not sure if they've fixed it yet but the free Media Center serials run out on the 31st/January so activate in the next day day or two if you've got a free WMC serial.

You still need to get an ISO/DVD from somewhere though.

    Looks like his on RTM.

I pretty much did the same as Parker, I don't like paying for things, especially an operating system.

    Ah indeed, didn't check.

As for the trick, yeah I've seen it, but I ain't touching that. The whole reason I want it legal is because I use the whole scale of services, my email account is not just my email, it's my skydrive (25GB) with all my school stuff, it holds my Xbox account with all the purchases, holds my Windows phone stuff with also all my purchases, contacts etc and some other stuff.
MS is pretty strict if they catch you, whole accounts have been disabled for example when someone has bad material on their Skydrive. If I were to loose this account, then it would cost me lots. Nah I just went legit for once. ;)

Re: So what's your experience with Windows 8 so far?

I bought it a couple days ago (It was $40, why the fuck not?)

At first, I felt like I was not in control of my computer. I couldn't even figure out how to shut it off! I am not used to this.

With two days of messing around with it, I do like it. It's a lot quicker to navigate than any previous Windows OS, and the whole app store integration wasn't a terrible idea.

I do not like the fact that desktop apps are not treated the same as actual apps. I feel like I go into a completely different OS when I am using an app store app. The menus are different, right clicking does a completely different thing, and it's just a lot more confusing than the desktop apps.

I like the left bar for viewing open apps, I use that more often than the taskbar.

All in all, it's a good OS. to people weary of getting it: Try it out for a couple of days before you write it off, it's really not that bad.

To me, It feels like a iPhone OS, With the whole slide it up to unlock.
My question is, This is meant to run on computers and tablets.
So whats up with the lock screen, Thats only really needed on iphones because they dont have accounts.
Im yet to use windows 8, (My Mum wont allow me to upgrade our computer) But im hoping sometime in the near future i can upgrade parts of my computer so it can handle windows 8.

Re: So what's your experience with Windows 8 so far?

The slide up to unlock is from WP. That said, I don't get why it's in there either, for tablets it makes some sense (even though the password requirement should be enough), but for regular PC's it makes no sense. Not sure if it can be disabled.
Still any press of a button will unlock it, so it's not a big hassle, but still pointless in most cases.

It's why I like Start8, I basically want the 2 to be seperate from each other. I know MS didn't intend for it that way, but personally I want it to be clear when I'm in metro and when I'm in the normal mode. This is also why my metro interface is purely made for metro, I don't have regular apps in it etc.

I didn't know about Start8. Now seeing it, it would definitely help ease into Windows 8. The scariest part for me upon logging in was no start menu (not the traditional one, at least).

Re: So what's your experience with Windows 8 so far?

I'd rather stay at windows 7.

Rather stay at Windows 7, because I've recently tried windows 8 and it didn't really gave me any good intentions. Because it's for if you have a touch screen. So it would be nice if i have a touch screen to have Windows 8 driving on it but not when i have a dead normal computer.

Although It's as nice to drive at a Computer too. I'm still going to say no. Because i just don't bother at all to run a tablet/touch screen software on my normal computer. Maybe when I'm having Tablet or such where you can drive it on then i might say yes i will.
