Tablet vs Nook & Kindle for reading

I'm about to buy a device to avoid having to carry heavy books everywhere and read them from a portable device.

My question is, is a tablet (e.g. Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 or Nexus) really that annoying to read from when compared to a dedicated device like the Kindle? Is it as dumb as this heavily sponsored website says it is? http://gizmodo.com/5890629/reading-b...ablets-is-dumb

What about screen sizes, is a 7'' tablet unreadable when compared to a 10'' screen?

I have a tablet (nexus 10) and have used a kindle. TBH, I would go with the tablet. The screens are generally better plus you have the access of an entire operating system so you can do a lot more. A 7" is very readable given books come in all shapes and sizes.

Buy a tablet , it is almost the same when it comes to a kindle , only difference is that a table has a whole operating system and the kindle is designed to make the user read for hours

You have to first ask yourself if you will get distracted by the features of a tablet computer. Also, would you miss having the features of a tablet computer if you got a Kindle e-reader knowing that you could have had a tablet computer?

I would personally get the tablet computer mainly because I would make use of it better than an e-reader, however I know that someone like my brother who reads a lot would make more use of a dedicated e-reader.

I think I'm going to get the nexus 7 but I can't find it in any shop and only at the google website. Before I buy it though, I need to know if when reading an ebook can you also switch the device to landscape mode or is also locked in that application as it is on the start screen? Couldn't find any info on that.

As far as I'm concerned any stock Android app has the ability to be viewed in landscape mode. In fact, I believe any app should be able to do that unless the developer specifically makes it so you can't.

Why don't you get the kindle fire. Its a tablet and has e-books and is also cheaper than the nexus 7

    Kindle fire
I heard the best place is to buy it from Argos.

Buy Asus Google Nexus 7 Inch Tablet - 32GB at Argos.co.uk - Your Online Shop for Tablets.

Most have eBooks now, because Amazon released Kindle apps on multiple platforms.

That's how it should be but I'd rather be sure before I buy it. I really don't want to play with fire and mod the software the day after I buy it. Maybe MentaL can confirm it works like that on his nexus.

As Hejula said, it's just another tablet. And the screen size is smaller on the KF. I've also looked at the KF HD but I'm unsure about the battery life though I'm also unsure about the nexus battery life. The ambient light sensor of the KF HD is a cool feature though.

Edit: I just noticed that on the KF HD you have to buy the power adapter separately and it costs $19.

Well it finally arrived and the answer to my question is yes, you can rotate the screen when reading books as well as the main screen. There is one thing that pisses me off about is the screen brightness which is far too bright at its lowest setting and it takes about 90% of the battery and makes it last 9 hours when it could probably last longer.

Re: Tablet vs Nook & Kindle for reading

My wife has the normal Kindle & the Kindle Fire.

She loves them both. Clearly, the normal Kindle is best for your eyes and has the best battery life (but lacks features of a tablet).

The Kindle Fire is pretty nice though -- a well-polished, very affordable Amazon product with good battery life.

And since Amazon is just utterly pwnage, it works out well since you get everything from them. They have loads of free books and if you are an Amazon Prime member, you can stream a ridiculous amount of movies for free (many of which are pretty new too).

Anyway, it really does depend on what you intend to do. A more techy type person may want something with more power.

It seems though you already made your purchase. Just thought I'd add my 0.02USD after the fact though =p
