    Vista getting the boot?

Windows 7 Due In 2009 | Are Vista’s Failures To Blame? | Tech In Demand

Windows Vienna is scheduled to be released sometime next year. It sounds like Microsoft is doing to Vista what they did to Windows ME and that Vienna will be XP's true successor.

I've seen some previews of Vienna, not sure if they're legit or not, but yeah, it looks nice.
    Finally, Microsoft sees sense!

Me and my brother were talking about Windows 7, couln't remember the codename though.

Isn't Vienna meant to be similar to Vista only much better?

    Re: Vista getting the boot?

Vienna is like a combination of MAC and Vista from what I've seen.
The old name for Windows 7 was BlackComb or something.

But, if WinVista SP1 took up 15GB of HD, then I don't wanna see what Vienna is gonna take up.

Who cares about diskspace. A 500 gb harddisk costs around 100 euros nowadays. It doesn't matter to much to me.

    SP1 takes 15GB? Christ.

I'd imagine Microsoft would do some serious decompression of Vienna, and you have to remember Vista is full of crappy, unneccessary features

I do hope they come up with something like "50% discount for people who already bought vista" because else those people have just been majorly fucked.

I have Vista Ultimate and I doubt Microsoft would ever be that kind.

How? The time interval between releases has been 2 years or less before...
That article says the end of 2009, thats 3 years...
If you buy proprietary software, you better be prepared to throw some more money if you want the upgrades :P

    Re: Vista getting the boot?

Umm.... Vienna was just a rumor that someone pulled out of their ass. The proper codename is BlackComb.

Also 2009 is wrong and your article is well outdated. The last I heard from MS is that it's expected in the second half of 2010 with beta starting about Q2 next year.

And if it wasn't for Vista needing to be rewritten a few years ago it would have been out in early 06. MS used to try to release a new OS every 3 years anyways and want to come back to that trait and not having to write the same OS twice before releasing it. :icon6:

Anyways with Windows 7 you are looking at the introduction to Surface which is one of those touch surface interfaces which looks just amazing. Also the kernal is being totally rewritten instead of updating the old NT kernal another time. The new kernal should be like Linux being very light weight and relying on programs on top of it to perform tasks unlike NT.

Other then that I don't know much about it yet. MS hasn't told any of us testers much.

Edit: Oh yeah, it's going to be 64-bit only.

Good i think cause by then ppl will have 4GB of RAM standard.
as 32 bit only supports up to 3.5gb or summit like that.
if that is the difference am not sure.

It's supposed to be 4gb (theoretically).

Only have 2gb so haven't seen for myself but I've heard that vista sp1 fixed that problem so it does show 4gb and not 3.5

3.2gb is for 32bits OS. Only 2003 Enterprise allows upto 32gb ram in 32bits.

Im using XP x64 due to I have 4gb ddr2 800 at home.

    Re: Vista getting the boot?

Nah it's 2^32 but those 4gb means RAM and VRAM so if you got a gfx card with 512mb you only get 3,5gb.

    Re: Vista getting the boot?

32-bit supports a total of 4gb of RAM but the OS will reserve a portion of the RAM as system cache for PCI devices like video cards and sound cards. So if you have a 512mb video card it will appear as 3.5gb.

Also XP only allows access of up to 2gb of RAM per application so anymore cannot benefit a single program and is used by other programs and the system.

Vista allows you to use more then 2gb of RAM per program.

When Vienna comes out, I would never get it. It's like a Longhorn and Vista remix. I would always stay with my Vista and XP Computers. :D

That's for desktops... for laptops 15GB is actually quite a bit.

EDIT: I read a news article about SP1 coming out next week here, and it's supposed to be 550mb for 32bit users... so where is this 15GB coming from?
