Hello guys! I contacted Dell, because of my faulty Hard Drive. I purchased servers and stuffs, but this issue, is new. I newly bought this server <1 year so a sudden shock to me when I found out that my hard drive broke. Can anyone tell me about the precautions I should take care? And what causes the Hard Disc so spoil? What I know is that, if a Hard Disc broke, it's encountered serious damage (drop,watered etc).
? Help.
Anything can destroy a Hard Drive, from excessive humidity in the atmosphere to having it dropped or even a virus. I don't find a broken hard drive to be something "odd", it could happen within a week or it could happen within 10 years.
Wow.. Never though of that, Anyways, I got a replacement from Dell. It's been quite cold here lately. Continous raining. I should setup a room temperature for my servers.

Power failures also has the chance to bastardize your hard drive.
Yea power also can be a contributing factor. If you regularly turn off your PC incorrectly (ie. from the power point or back of PSU), that can also damage the HDD. If the HDD is doing something at that particular time, suddenly shutting it down can cause the heads to seize up or damage the disks.
there is like a billion reasons a HD can fail.
the common reasons would be:
Water, in any form. Keep a AC in you sever room ^_^
Usage, if you HDD runs for 24/7 with high I/O it's more likly to give in.
Magnets, Computers hate those things, and HDD even more.

Got it, But it's just purchased..
A hdd has a warrenty from the factory of 1 year.
So if it's more than 1 year you will have a hard time getting a new one if you have no extended DELL warrenty.
And i know this from a fact. Did 1 year work for Dell.

Dell does not make components, they simply assemble computers. If a HDD fails outside the Dell warranty period, then you claim it back from the manufacturer.By law it's 1 year.

Additionally, Dell covers ALL of its hardware components with a warranty, and the mandatory 1 year warranty is strictly regional.

Consider your faith lost, because every time you call Dell support you get people that have no idea what the fuck you're talking about when you start talking "real" techie talk. God forbid you use any slang.
Anyways, all you have to do with these dumb asses on support is tell them you were planning to buy a computer. I told them I was planning to buy a new PC as soon as my current one was fixed. This method got me a brand new HDD in my now 7 year old Dell desktop.
They don't give a fuck about you until you start talking about buying something.
Oh yea I've noticed that alot in almost every major IT company or ISP. They hire people purely for their customer service skills; As far as they are concerned any ACTUAL technical information you need to know, you can simply lookup in the tech support guide they provide you with.
Having a technical conversation with someone from "Tech Support" is alot like talking to a senior citizen who has just discovered email.
There are also many people i know who started working for an IT company/ISP as a "Techie" but as soon as they started working there they were put into Sales positions and expected to make sales in addition to providing "support". Regardless of how much support they provided, some even got fired for not meeting their sales quota, even though they weren't Sales staff.

I have pretty good luck with their enterprise support. About 1/2 of the people you get on the call are competent enough to figure out the issue or to fix it pretty quickly remotely for you instead of referring you to documentation etc.
Calling in their tier 0 tech support is almost guaranteed to net you someone who knows less than you and is using a computer with a searching capability to "diagnose" your problem. And they don't deviate from their script because they don't know any better.
They have tried to upsell me every time I needed a replacement part. I don't doubt this at all.
Dell has lovely support, that I must say. Ok, this is the status, I called Dell on 30, of January and the HDD arrives on 31 of January, that makes it, a fast support and recovery. And they came all the way from the north to the south of Malaysia just to send a HDD, and not forgetting other people :P
Consider mass amount of HDD are made near where you live, it's no surprise you got it that fast.
