Antivirus companies prey on not only a users lack of technological knowledge, but their fear. They use this to make you pay for and install software you really just don't need.
Pop up ad's should never be included in antivirus software because by definition the pop up itself is adware, one of the things you are trying to combat.
They all have pros and cons. I use AVG Free which I dislike, but can't be bothered changing, MalwareBytes for spyware and malware, and GMER for rootkit removal. Speaking of rootkits, what do you non-AV people use for rootkit scans? I'm just curious if the Windows ones do that as well?
I use Kapersky's TDSSKILLER for rootkit scan....best free one I've ever seen.
Ah nice, I didn't know Kaspersky had a free rootkit scanner. I might give it a go and see how it performs, though GMER is pretty good already.
Kaspersky? Damn, don't think I've even heard anyone mention that since like 2010... lol
How about Eset's NOD32? Haha, I always liked that back in the day, really good detection, but like others have mentioned in this post some of it can be a bit overkill these days.
I did use nod32 a lot myself. But that was back when I thought the extra features were needed. Everyone has to learn at some point. :)
Windows defender with Adblock and noscript does more than any antivirus software will be able to do for you. And it's all free. Including malware bytes for slightly more advanced scanning.
Real men don't use antivirus programs.
Or just AVG Free. But of course, I'm a real man.
Malware bytes is my personal favorite.
Malwarebytes saves the day again - https://forum.ragezone.com/f338/goog...s-1065095-new/
