I do believe removing the start button was done to force metro, just like you don't have the option to boot in metro or in normal desktop mode. MS is definitely trying to force the new way of working with Windows, as a user I don't like it and I'm not sure how it will effect sales, that said, if you want Metro to be used on all computers, then forcing is the only way really since people tend to stick with what they know and they will never learn about Metro if they don't have to. In the end it's a huge risk.
The apps is definitely a issue, especially since it's connected to your account, you can't even sell them with the phone. Personally I could switch since 95% of the money spend on my account is for games, so I could just keep using it as a gaming device, but say if you bought navigation software, then switching is not an option.
Still the majority of the people have spend nothing or almost nothing on their phones, so they can still switch. We will see how it goes, the Lumia 920 is definitely popular, how that translates to sales remains the question.
