Re: Why Windows 8 Scares me

Idk why people hate windows 8 so much? I hated it at first too, but started loving it after i installed it. And about the windows button i actually love that they casted that away (i love getting used to new things) ",...,"

They're gonna keep changing things as this is what they want it to be in the future.

It's all well and good saying it's the future but is it really? If it was the future there wouldn't be such a demand for 3rd-party applications to get the start menu back.

I'm going to get a Surface with Windows 8 when they come out, because that's what Windows 8 is for... touch screen devices...

In the end it's a huge risk.

The apps is definitely a issue, especially since it's connected to your account, you can't even sell them with the phone. Personally I could switch since 95% of the money spend on my account is for games, so I could just keep using it as a gaming device, but say if you bought navigation software, then switching is not an option.

Still the majority of the people have spend nothing or almost nothing on their phones, so they can still switch. We will see how it goes, the Lumia 920 is definitely popular, how that translates to sales remains the question.
People must be spending money on apps, or it wouldn't have spawned an entirely new industry. I would say the majority do spend money on games and software, so they are invested in whatever platform they already use.

That said, I can say exactly the same thing about windows games too, that's why I would never use a mac or linux (until steam works on it!). If I could use all the software I have on win7, on a mobile phone, I can see how that would be advantageous. Though I'd still question if a mobile device is capable enough to run most win7 programs anyway, maybe in a few years?

I can totally see google/android and Linux joining together, thus making it Microsoft vs apple vs open source on all platforms. In that scenario, and if windows continues down this same path, I could totally see myself moving over to Linux once games publishers have done so. At the end of the day I would bet on 90% of windows users only using windows because of the programs it allows you to use. There is simply no choice in the matter right now, that is how MS should be approaching it, not by fucking with the status quo to the point of developers wanting to leave the system.

Got myself a copy. Installed it. Tweaked the shit out of it so it meets my needs.
And it works even better than win 7 did.

Don't care about app store or what ever the hell it is. Removed it.
Don't like modern start thing? Install start8. Bam!

Bought and installed Windows 8 yesterday. It has changed since the Release preview! it's alot more fluent, and I'm really exciting to use it on a daily basis now.

Also, I can't believe Microsoft didn't mention anywhere on their windows 8 release that they are giving everyone who has Windows 8 FREE MUSIC

and it's not even shitty music, they have a huge library...

Are you honestly that cheap that you can't afford a Windows 8 upgrade license? They've reduced the price to 40$ a pop until January 31st 2013 so it's hardly expensive anymore.

Actually, the license they are giving out for $40 bucks in not really an "upgrade" product key, if you check your order on Microsoft Store, it says it's a full license.

Besides, I didn't do an upgrade from my unlicensed windows 7, I just did a clean install, like any other windows installation.

Hate the entire tablet concept the OS runs on, simply the fact I lack a start menu or a "My Computer" on the desktop will put me off from using this.

Read the thread..thats an easy fix...it's just defaulted hidden...

And Windows hasnt automaticly added "My Computer" to the desktop for years...you have to add it yourself.

I tend to agree with this post. I won't say I'm a hardcore Linux user but aside from gaming, I'm kind of a basic user now, I just watch/listen to media, and browse the internet, I don't do a lot of gaming any more so Linux (for me) would it interesting full time machine, I'm hanging out for proper native Ubuntu on Android and I think once this gets released I would probably move over if it's as good as it looks.

I guess it depends heavily on the country, here in the Netherlands at least 90% of the people do not have a credit card, that percentage is even way higher under 25. So buying stuff is for a lot of people not a real option.

On top of that Android is famous for free apps and of course illegal downloads, the simple fact is that there is almost no profit in selling stuff on Android.
Apple is a different story, it has a lot more apps that cost money, however a lot of people still have switched phones.
In the end while I agree that it's an obstacle for some, it's not for the majority of the people.

90% of the people don't even know what Linux is, they might have heard the name once, but have no clue what it is. Linux is simply not attractive, the problem is that they can't even find 1 project to focus on, they have like 5 versions who are very close to each other in popularity, they pose no threat at this moment to MS.

As for game developers, I don't see it happening, well maybe some of the developers want it, but the publishers don't give a crap about it, they just want low production costs and high income, everyone who plays already uses Windows, so that's not gonna change, so they have no incentive to change.
Microsofts hold on the PC industry is way too strong and as long that Apple is extremely expensive and all the Linux devs can't find themselves working on 1 project, there is no threat to it.

Re: Why Windows 8 Scares me

I'd say ubuntu is pretty popular tbh, but afaik the kernel is updated for all versions of linux? But I'm no expert! But yeah I believe the flavour of linux doesn't really matter, the kernel is constantly being updated behind the scenes.

Also I wouldn't dismiss Linux too quickly. The Escapist : News : Gabe Newell Thinks Steam Can Help Mainstream Linux
Like I said before, I only use Windows because that's where games are. If Windows was to offer nothing over Linux, then what exactly would stop people from moving over? Hell the Linux interface is probably closer to Win7 than Win8s is! Plus it's free...

This is the top 10 based on page hits. Of course this does not reflect installations, but it gives you some idea how popular they are.
    1 Mint 3351
    2 Mageia 2525
    3 Ubuntu 1998
    4 Fedora 1494
    5 openSUSE 1312
    6 Debian 1271
    7 Arch 1170
    8 PCLinuxOS 958
    9 CentOS 829
    10 Zorin 810
DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD.

They also got an article up there about which distribution you should/could get etc
DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD.

This just shows how divided the community is, because there are so many choices, it makes it really hard for anyone to make a choice and especially with such a huge player as MS, you don't want 10 alternatives, you just want 1.

As for Gabe Newell, well first of all he's full of shit. His annoyance with Windows 8 is because they are competing with Steam now. He says W8 will suck, yet offers no explanation. He should be doing a little less crying.
And as for bringing games over to Linux, that sounds nice, but how is he gonna do that? Sure there are a whole bunch of games with which he can do that, but many also rely on DirectX, not sure how he's gonna get all those games running on Linux.
