You know, just because Microsoft took their start menu away doesn't mean that they have changed their OS a hundred percent. It's just a damn start menu, it has been replaced by the metro screen which is like a few times bigger and serves the same function a start menu does, in fact, its more than a start menu now.

They're alienating power users.. that new menu would only slow me down. I'm not worried though, I use Linux + xfce4 for everything besides for debugging http, for that I use Windows XP (nothing can replace Fiddler2).

Nonsense. If you really think a fullscreen start menu is gonna slow you down, then you really ain't the power user you claim to be, rather you are a user who does not want change.

I've tried using Winows 8 on a normal computer.

It first was pretty nice but then i started to annoy myself on it on the fact that i don't have a touchscreen computer and therefore it is useless.

If you didn't search for programs via the search bar which is automatically focused when pressing start, then you're hardly a 'power user'.

The idea of Windows 8 is to promote tablets with the addition of the functionalities and the power of a PC. Having a touch screen is key in fully experiencing the benefits of Windows 8, cause it was designed partially for that. Else, one will end up complaining about how it is worse than Windows 7 and generalize that the same applies for computers with touchscreen, all because of simple things like a missing start menu. It is amazing how such people fail to look at not just the user interface only but also other parts of the operating system, like software optimizations and fixes.

Thus one cannot say Windows 8 sucks in general just because he is using it on a Windows 7 device. People do experience paradigm shifts time to time and they generally get used to it. Its like Godel wouldn't have thought of computers being possible but in the end he ended up using them. Exceptions include those who do not meet the requirements of having a brain and knowing how to read from a screen.

If one is indeed desperate for the classical Windows 7 start menu, he can install third party apps like StarDock, the one that Hejula mentioned.

Just upgraded to windows 8 pro and the old start menu is useless and gives your installation a ricer look.

Also, anyone who says that the new menu is slow must not have a machine capable of opening the previous start menu in a decent amount of time.

I think editing windows path variable or whatever it's called to start programs via home key + r qualifies myself to be a power user. I can usually find the program I want to launch faster than the search could find it anyway as my start menu always becomes very cluttered.

Your grammar makes no sense what so ever. Also, the search function on windows 8 takes under 1 second to index any results for any program you need to run.

The only issue I have found is when using text editors and such you have to run them as admin otherwise you can't save ;(

Windows 8 is a giant leap in the right step, even if it was designed for tablets and touch screens it works very well with a normal PC.

Exactly what are you basing that on? I found that windows 8 runs cleaner than any previous version of windows. People are so focused on the design change and apparently immensly scare of change that they try to think of whatever reasons possible to bitch on Windows 8.
I think it looks great. I'm running the pro version on VMWare and I really like it actually. It comes with a lot of build in features which previous versions of windows didn't have and I really lik how they are combining pc, tablet, Xbox and phone to work all together.

I'll be waiting for windows 8 to mature a bit, buy an SSD and then upgrade to the Pro version. Until then Ill keep it on my virtual machine.

Metro is EXACTLY the same as the old start menu. You're not a power user if you can't take 3 seconds to type out what you're looking for.

Windows 8 is dead sexy in every aspect. They got the GUI and integration spot on.

This is coming from someone who works with Linux daily. Windows 8 is the perfect consumer PC.

^ Shows that you obviously haven't even attempted to use Windows 8. STFU and stop talking about shit you haven't even experienced. You're not entitled to an opinion of something until you have used or experienced whatever it is. Don't reply with "I already did" because this statement shows you clearly haven't touched it at all.

Let me get this straight, it takes you a shorter time period to type in 'photoshop.exe' or whatever then it does for you to type in 'pho' and click the application?

    mmmm

Yes it actually takes me less time since I don't have to touch the mouse at all, just the keyboard. Once you use linux you become more comfortable with terminal/cmd prompt.

I'm not writing poetry, I'm replying to a forum post. It might index faster for you, but my PC is not exactly new and I couldn't care less.
