lighting isn't an effect, as much as it is a necessity. And how do you add light in Paint? xD If your talking about the effects in the 4th one, yes they were hand drawn. Theres a style of effects called "vector" you know;other then the whored c4d's everyone is using.
Some of them look fantastic actually, mostly the sprite ones and the poker hand. Great signatures.

@!BERZERK!: I started out with tuts but there very limited with The Gimp; I think Ive gone through every single gimp tut. Recently, Ive just been teaching myself. Experimenting with different things.

Some of them are really great, other are a sound effort. Try reading some decent tutorials you might improve more.
Some are really old and some are my newer ones. Ive gone through every possible Gimp tut worth reading.

Anyway, you're work is really good, especially for gimp. Have you ever tried photoshop?
