Did you use Bevell & Emboss on it? If so dont ever use that on text it rarely works.
But keep at it! For a first real nice

I use century gothic on my text than gave it a 2pixel stroke of gradient...
Aah okay, my bad for the mis look lol.
Try using an Outer Glow effect on text instead...

Looks like 2 C4Ds and a render, smudged and slapped on text... decent for a beginner i guess.
