I think it's great, the render is blended well yet still fully visible, and the background kind of matches the mood of the render.
I like the colored one better.

I agree, it's more of a sadness, due to the monotone of it. Happy = Colorful.
A Colored Happiness would be the oposite of An uncolored Happiness therefore it would be sad :/
