You cant forget the "big four" of thrash...
Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer. These bands were the ones leading the world into thrash metal at that time which was exploding, but was short lived thanks to hair-metal =/
well it evolved into death/black metal with the help of bathory and chuck schuldiner.

Venom was another amazing band.
Black metal was also known during those years I believe.
Ofcorse it was known! venom releases first demo in 1980.
Its pretty amazing. Wish i was like 18 during those years =(

so many, its in possible to imagine all the greatest ones, but i guess it must come down to a few 60-75 Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and Queen, 75-84 Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Scorpians, Golden Earing, The Ramones, Ted Nugent, Pink Floyd *anymore and i'll start on my playlist =P*, 84-92 Metallica, Iron Maiden, Venom, Billy Idol, Pantera, Slayer, Anthrax, Alice In Chains, well thats my opinion, so many, but i cant name all, it would be going forever!
