as a musician myself.. there is no such things as the best guitarist ever.

the guitar is an instrument that is not defined by how it sounds.
the sound and feel differs from one player to the other.

with this u can compare the soulful music of eric clapton to fast sweeps of steve vai.

i can only say that there are people who stand out of any other guitar play... and those are the really great players :)

Speed: Joint Michael Angelo Batio and Petrucci (dont argue)
Technical Licks/Riffs and Prog Style: John Petrucci
Sweeping Technique: Jason Becker

Id say that if Jason wasnt paralysed now, he'd definitely be THE best guitarist, and he'd be untouchable

As for best WRITER.... thats an entirely different thing and comes under the category of best WRITER... NOT best GUITARIST jeez :P
