Electric. They may cost more, with the amp and whatnot but its so much better, in my opinion. Get an acoustic effects pedal too and boom yer set. :P

    both
    start off with electric
its slightly harder imo and once you master that, acustic will be easy

they both have different qualitys that shine through when played.

That's actually wrong, you want to start out with acoustic, then move to electric.

Electric stings are very thin and harsh on your fingers. If you start with acoustic you'll build the calluses from the thicker strings. Plus they're heavier and you'll build more finger strength from the start. On top of all that, going form Electric to Acoustic is actually harder then going Acoustic to Electric. For the fact that acoustic strings and frets are much more spread out.

If you want the best of both worlds just get a nice acoustic electric. Just make sure it has a wood body.

But no matter what we say will make you change your mind about not liking acoustics. Just get what you want, and stick with it.

Remember, you have to practice the boring stuff in order to play the cool stuff.

start from acoustic, electric will feel like uber-easy after you play on acoustic for a few months.

It may feel easier after some time playing the acoustic to play the electric guitar. Because of the smallest distance of the frets etc. BUT keep in mind that the electric guitar is a very tough instrument if you wanna actually learn how to play it and master it. I suggest going for the electric because this is what YOU want. Playing an acoustic, which you dont like, may result in you getting bored and stop playing the guitar.

    A bad advice tbh...

But of course, the choice is yours my friend - Either listen to a person who has some good experience behind him and to a real pro, (Our own DaCheat, of course! And not only in guitars btw, basically anything that has to do with music) , or to this dude who thinks he has a clue what he's talking about...

BUT! On the other hand, I know a dude who's a really good guitarist, and when he just started, he started off from an electric straight away. But he has enough years of playing experience to have already corrected the imperfections that the unorthodox beginning might have caused a billion times already.

    Re: [POLL?] Electric or Acoustic?

I'm not liking the amount of false info flying round here...

Well, you can pretty much apply what you've learnt on electric to acoustic, and vice versa, apart from certain techniques which are custom to specific instruments such as percussive playing on the acoustic.

I'd say get an acoustic. You can get them for pretty cheap, there's not faffle about what pickups you have, whether your amp is solid state or valve, what tone you want out of it, whether you want a double locking tremolo, etc. Plus, you got to think about all the extra such as 1/4 jacks, effects pedals, etc. In my opinion, being a beginner, you'd be pretty dissapointed with the 'versatility' you can get out of just a starter guitar and amp.

With acoustic, you get portability and simplicity.

+ I don't know why some are making it out to look one instrument takes more effort/technicality than the other. DEPENDING on what you play, each instrument is as equal.

Depending on what genres you like, what type of music you like, etc - that should influence your decision.

    Re: [POLL?] Electric or Acoustic?

It depends on what kind of music you listen and also enjoy playing.

i listen to Metal/Hardcore bands, but i'd rather enjoy playing acousticly.

I agree with DaCheat, Start on Acoustic, You'll Learn better theory as well such as chord progressions etc.

Again, there's a bit of un-founded info flying around here.

You can still play a chord progression on an electric... you can also learn the same amount of theory on an electric as an acoustic.

They're the same instrument, they both have 6 strings, are tuned standardly in eBGDAE. The only difference is one's electric, and the other's acoustic. You can pretty much play anything on acoustic that you would on electric (aslong as you don't delve too far into to instrument variation techniques, But even things like fingerstyle, I myself apply it to electric guitar, sometimes in the form of hybrid picking.) and vice versa.

I can still play power metal an acoustic (the only limit in my mind being the string gauges, which would affect legato) if I wanted to. It'd probs sound shit yes, but then again, playing Tommy Emanuelle on a Schecter with distortion cranked up is going to sound like a completely different song.

I'm happy you know who Tommy Emanuelle is! haha

But yes KyleEnos is right, you can play on both, but from my teaching experience (yes I gave lessons on guitar.) It is much easier to learn on acoustic.

But like I said in my last post. If you hate acoustic, then screw it! Play what you like, whatever is going to keep you motivated go for it.
