Just a little tip about throwing parties... Nobody gives a shit what kind of music what you like. It's all about the guests. If they're happy, then it'll be a good party. If they hate the music that's playing, they'll probably leave. Also, play music for the girls, then throw in a treat or two for the guys to keep them happy. Guys are like drones.. If they see that the girls are going crazy about the music, they'll automatically like it too.

During the party you'll get a vibe off of everyone, then just re-create and tweak the playlist.

Check out Family Force 5, Medic Droid, 3oh!3 and Innerpartysystem. Its a good mix of techno, electrorock, and some hiphop undertones (3oh!3) that could help liven up a party. Of course what we usually do for parties is pretty much what DaCheat suggested. I always tend to ask people what sort of songs they like hearing at a party of if they have a special request to put on the playlist. That way you know people will be happy and you can get an idea of the sort of music they like.
