i got ddosed, all the time, even 1gbps traffic didn't help, but then moved to host that have juniper SRX5800 it can deal with 20kk ppc, well its not cheap, but its fkin god mode.
anyone who suggests software solutions is a fkin nab. actually software programs will make it all even worse.

Ddos has a lot of methods, the most used Ddos method is spam requests, opening connections to a server with TCP, UDP and HTTP methods. Ddos will never be stopped, but we can prevent it.

Methods for ddosing:
ICMP
UDP
TCP-Synflood
HTTP/Crawling
SSL
Mailserver/Spam

even if a program bounces the traffic back to its origin, it's still taking all the bandwidth so the lagg continues, and i'm pretty sure that an attack from a botnet with 5k+ zombies wouldn't even feel these "bounce backs." there's a reason why DDoS attacks are untraceable.

i mean, 25 kids on a lan, opening up the DOS window and types in "Ping ip-address" isnt called ddos attack.

There are alot of worse DDOSing methods than the ones you wrote above.
I'm not even sure if those are DDOS attacks or DOS attacks.

NO! Ive tested blocking inbound and outbound (using IPSEC + MS Firewall) to one of my server (without any hardware firewall) under attack and even that didnt help. Imagine how this attack can cripple a server without any open port, im using kvm in that time.
