    Server Specs, SQL Questions

I have a few questions regarding Mu Online private servers.
    1. In most of the tutorials on this forum, I have seen that people use Microsoft SQL Server. Would it possible to substitute that for MySQL, or is MSSQL the only solution?
    2. What kind of server specs are needed to support a large userbase Mu Online private server? How important is clock speed, number of cores, RAM, and hard drive speed? How does each contribute to the server performance? Lastly, regarding the number of cores, are private servers multi-threaded, or is it only a single-thread application?

As time goes by, and if you're server getting more characters, you need to have memory [disk] to accommodate all of this, and also, to prevent lag, the speed of your internet and server [ pc ] must be also in priority. This is my own understanding, correct me if im wrong =]

How about SQL/clock speed/number of cores?
Internet speed is not an issue, it will be a dedicated server.

In my opinion (and experience after 6 years) its very important how many cores, ram, etc. But the most important aspect for us were disks. Sata disks could not keep up with us. ATM we are running 2x300gb 15.000rpm disks that seem to be able to handle the load quite nicely. How many players do you have? If you are recently opening a server just use normal sata until you see they are not enough. If you have over 1000 online then you'll need raptors or scsi.

    ATM using:

    Dual Processor Quad Core Xeon 5620 - 2.40GHz (8x2.40GHz | 2x12MB cache W/HT)
    12.288Mb (12GB DDR3 1333 MHz)
    2x 300GB SA-SCSI 15.000 RPM
    100Mb download/100Mb upload

Ram usage is near 4gb and cpu usage is between 15% to 30%

10/10mb will do just fine, we are using 3mb/3mb max so the 100mb is just for show off IMO. Most good hosting services will give you the 100mb upgrade for free.

Regarding the number of cores, is Mu multi-threaded, or does it utilize only a single core? Based on this, would 8 cores like yours do better than a Sandy Bridge 3.4 ghz with 4 cores, or would the Sandy Bridge, with a faster clock speed, do better?

Also, what's the deal with bandwidth? How much per month?

1300 online + SQL all the time + 5 subs that make a shit load of logs + 10 dataservers + other programs + website + advanced logs we use + everything.

I have 2 hostings, one for website (and client) and one for server. The client, website (not scripts), images, etc uses 3tb to 15tb (when client is updated). Dedicated server uses a lot less, see image.

Oh, so it's not a lot. Also, could you answer my questions regarding processor and SQL?

You can config that as you like or need. If you want you can assign x cores to x process. The possibilities are infinite.

No, I'm asking whether or not Mu will utilize all the cores available, or only a single core - is clock speed or number of cores more important?
Also, can I use MySQL instead of MSSQL?

    Re: Server Specs, SQL Questions

it depends on how you set the affinity of the process, you have at least 3 database process+2 gameserver+exdb+joinserver+CS+misc app+...
so its better to have more cores than 2-4 cores with bigger speed
Mu processes dont require too much speed ...it all depends on how many users do you have

    max 50 users s6 server=dual core CPU 4000+ 200gb hdd sata/ata 10mb connection 2gb ram(minimum)
max 100 users s6 server =dual core Cpu 6000+ 200gb hdd 10000Rpm if all logs are on 10mb connection 4-8 GB ram
    and so on..
as u can see the only important variables are hdd rpm and ram
