Letters are not a good place to start tbh... this should have taken 44 faces (88 tris) and 48 vertices. See your corners? You could easily shave off almost half the amount of data by just combining those...

Don't let me discourage you from learning though, just make sure you learn the right way first before you jump right in... I am a firm believer in teaching through trial and error, but throwing yourself into something with little knowledge will just cost you more time in the end.
