Re: Multi manager error
There is a better solution... you just restore from the backup you made before you installed SQL Server...

Imri?

What? You didn't make a system wide backup before you installed SQL Server? OH NOES!!!
(I jest with you, of course. The whole section above has a massive wry wink on it, you just can't see it.)
If XPs System Restore doesn't do the trick there is NO other solution I know of to get around it than to reinstall Windows.
If ANYONE knows of a way, *I* would love to hear it too. I may work on VMs and keep backups and all that stuff, but when uninstalling SQL foobars your OS so you can't use SQL again, it is really annoying. I've been caught out by it many times, and I'd love not to have to restore Ghost images or rollback VMs but I just don't know what it is that SQL leaves behind when in uninstalls that means you can't re-install it.
I'm sure you know there are many, many "uninstaller cleaner" programs and "system cleaner" programs which claim to clean up after a bad (poorly written) uninstaller. Many of them are quite expensive, and in my experience, none of them can do as good a job as I can do by logging an installation process and reverting all the changes made... and even that has not been sufficient with SQL Server.
YMMV. I wish for your sake that it does.
I mean what? Is it some dead registry entry, something corrupted in the Component Object Model, system files left hanging around that the installer can't upgrade because they came from it in the first place? I just don't know.
Can I use some magic installer switch to not bother checking if the system is suitable for installation and it will work anyway? If there is I've not found it.
---EDIT---
While I'm mentioning expensive solutions that don't work well... and for future reference, I say Ghost because it's well known system imaging software, but it's not cheep. I've used it professionally, but at home I tend to use TerraByte Unlmiteds BootIt! NG. It's not free, but it's not expensive, and the trial works perfectly well, and has no time restriction so long as you are happy to boot it off a floppy or CD, it's only limited if you want to use the boot manager. It images drives or partitions, and can resize partitions, re-order partitions, create or delete partitions too. So there is a lot more than you get with Ghost. (providing you don't want to Multi-cast images, which is getting harder with current OS licensing restrictions anyway)
Another well recommended free (for personal use) software is DriveImage XML. I've not used that one, but it runs in Windows so you don't need to burn a disc to use it, or even boot your PC down. Personally I just feel safer burning my OS off to discs (or, these days, more likely a NAS or portable hard drive) when it isn't running, but the DFS and mirroring services provided by modern OS mean it *shouldn't* be a problem, if your not as paranoid as me.
