Windows Vista Server up and running! :)

If you didnt think it could be done it has been done if vista users have any issues post here ive been through pretty much it all. Only bad thing is we gotta wait till IIS 7.0 is released before clans, and sod ranking can work but everything else works even 24/7 sod. If you dont feel like creating your server and u have vista or watever looking for more testers just add me on aim JohnnyCamacho03

But Vista is such a terrible OS, so not like anyone is gonna run a serious server on it.

I don't really call Vista terrible, it just needs to mature as an operating system. Thanks for the news however Insane. I doubt however I will use a PC user Operating system as a foundation for my PT test server much longer though. Having frustrations with XP already, and just about ready to switch back to my Win2k3.

Win 2k3 is the best option for running, it has no silly security protocols (Vista) and it's infrastructure was made to run server based systems.

Yes the security prompts and extra's on Vista do suck, but they can also disabled. But like I said, the OS is for end users mainly, not high end so comparing the two in a server environment is almost irrelevant, but I guess most people don't really get much of a choice when it's the only OS they have either way. One thing where Vista is superior to Win2k3 on security is spyware and malware protection in the OS itself. It's a bugger having to deal with spyware crap on Win2k3 when you got a full set of shit running in the background!

Well its not a great idea to download things on a dedicated host besides the essential server software anyway.

Ah fooey!!! Often times while working on my server I get bored with configurations and scripting, so I need to look at porn, and then poof, bug city. I kid, I kid. I do however become impatient, and download from the server. I mean, I sit at the computer anyways, no need to jump back and fourth between PC's. Now on a true dedicated box I can see not downloading from, but I am guessing the majority of people here run their servers from home... shit probably the majority of people don't even own wink2k3.... shit why the hell am I still talking about this crap!! I think the topic has swayed from it's original meaning. Shame on me!

I think the moral here is, obtain a copy of Win2k3 (Legal or Illegal), only run the server software and you should be good to go.

64bit os is better in many ways, e.g supports more than 1tb of hdd space and more than 4gb ram :) I personally use Win XP Pro x64 edition, 1,8tb hdd and 8gb ram :p

But then the problem with 64 bit becomes compatibility and emulation.

64 bit OS's are worse in many ways, on top of the points HappyHardcore made, lack of drivers, back to the age of 98 blue screen and in general just TERRIBLE compatibility as said earlier. The point here still remains, if you plan on running a serious server, don't go with a OS thats so troublesome.

Play games with Vista? God no, most games can't even run on Vista, and when they do run its terrible at terrible frame rates. Also Vista has a major lack of video drivers. Most serious gamers aren't even bothering with Vista (or they tried and switched back to XP pretty quickly).
