Can we stop supporting 07/08 assembly edits here?

    Title says it all.

With the source actually released for both '07 and 1.5, there is no need for assembly edits in GunZ anymore.

I request a rule to be made to stop people from posting help topics asking, "What is the offset for x address" and "can you help me inject a DLL into gunz?" as with the source released they are rather useless requests... the offsets will vary if you compile gunz yourself.

There is zero benefit from not compiling and just like any other development cycle there shouldn't be support for outdated things, just like when 07 was released, 05 was phased out.

I'm just tired of a lack of creativity and will to learn, and people leeching old assembly edits from years past isn't really helping people learn, in fact, it'll teach them to be spoonfed, and that's the last thing we need considering past history of the Gunz pserver scene. They'll ask for one edit, then ask for help with another thing, before you know it we have 10 threads on multiple trivial issues.

Another solution would be to have a subforum for 07/08 runnable discussion, I am open to ideas but I truly think we should as a community start phasing out 07/08 runnables. (and for that matter, compiled exe editing in general.)

The only exception to this rule would be in the case of newer, unreleased code that is going to be researched, IE; KGunZ releases an update and it has a new ELU format.

I've stopped supporting 2007 and 2008 since my 2009 files. And now that 1.5 is out, I dont support 2009. Always support the newest and best.

Having a rule that states "You develop using old techniques and your
thread will be closed," is kinda drastic, but I do like the subforum
    idea.

I never understand the usage of ASM edits and DLL injection ever since
the source was out, but it just seems common place anymore, which is
    quite annoying indeed.

Such rules can't really be made. Not everyone wants to switch to the 2011 files for whatever reasons. The best thing would be to just ignore such topics.

Having a separate sub-forum for older files will just turn out to be a complete mess. It'll just be 1 more section for us to manage because obviously, people are going to post threads related to the 2011 files in the 2007/2008 section and vice versa.

Whats the problem of people using older files?
Not everyone can get the 2011 files running.
It happened more in the past that older files were used here.
Remember when the January 2006 BR files were released and lots of people still used the IGunZ 2005 files?
Some people just don't want to switch to something else because they figured out how something works and don't want to re-learn everything to create a playable client again.
If people want to use old stuff let them use it.

There are newer files available, yes, but the '07 source that was leaked is identical to what we have available for '07 runnables, thus invalidating the '07 runnables. People should learn to use the source anyways, it'll save us a lot of trouble responding to outdated ways of managing a server and personally I don't like that if someone finds a new crash issue that we'd have to do some crazy assembly to fix it.

I'd much rather provide a source fix than looking up a client's memory addresses, and having those readily available hinders ones' ability to learn.

And from my experience if you don't want to learn you're just in it for something else, whether it be fame or money.

Fame or money (and of course, no life) are the only reasons people make private servers for the public. Those who would want to learn would hardly make help threads. If you think that a community of which 50% or so are non-english speaking can compile a source code written in a high level language, you're very much mistaken. People make private servers so that they can have fun with their friends (private private servers) or let others have fun with their friends and make new ones (public private servers). If they would want to learn C++, they'd read a book. If they would want to develop their C++ skills, they'd mind their own fucking business and not whine about amateurs asking for help setting up a private server. Just my $0.02.

I agree on the 07/08 subforum, that would be the best way to do this.

If they aren't going to learn and make money off of other people's work, then I am going to get paid for doing their work. Just my $50.

As a person who learned C++ through experimenting with other peoples' source code, I don't think a book is the best option.

This forum is for private server developments, not for making some non-english speaking person money.

Or maybe just make a new section for gunz 1.5, because it's a lot easier to start with 2008 or 2007 than 1.5 o_O

Yes, lets stop supporting those files just because you stopped using them.
