    Setup VPS and retro

Hey. Before anyone jumps down my throat, I'm asking to be shown/talked through how to do it. I'm trying to learn.

I have a pretty good knowledge of retros and how they work. I can set one up on my local host and do some pretty basic editing.

I want to know how you go about moving it from local host to a VPS. I'm using azure and revcms.

If anyone is willing to show me and talk me through a VPS etc and how it works I'd appreciate it and pay for the time if needed.

    Thanks
    Josh

Firstly you're gonna need a webserver. If you have a Windows VPS, it's best to go with IIS. Google for "Microsoft Web Platform". Install that program on your VPS and search for "IIS", "MySQL", "PHP" and "URL Rewrite" on there. Once installed through the web platform you can upload your CMS in the wwwroot folder and use URL Rewrite to get a web.config instead of .htaccess file. In your CMS replace every localhost with the IP address of your VPS or your domain. Open the emulator port in the firewall inbound rules and CLOSE the MySQL port. You can put your emulator anywhere BESIDES in the wwwroot folder.

    That's about it.

I understand the concept and appreciate the response @Derpina

I have done IIS and such before, placing files in the wwwroot folder in my C: drive, is this right?

The part I struggle with is uploading things such as the emulator onto the VPS and making it run.

And also I struggle understanding how to get my domain to point to my VPS

Open up your config file in your management folder then edit everything so it is linked to everything correctly, once done open up your client.php and look for 'connection'info'host' and near that there will either be an ip already in there or 'server_ip' Make sure you put your ip in there. Then open up the configs in your settings folder which is found in the same path as the emulator then link it all up.

Note: There's a great tutorial on how to set everything up with the latest azure emulator build. Just copy everything and once done feel free to to ask us for help if you have a problem.

I've seen that, thanks. That's what I mentioned about using IIS.

It's more the VPS I don't understand. How do I upload the emulator onto the VPS and run it?? That sort of thing.

    Appreciate the reply @Robot

Rar or Zip everything up then copy it and paste it on the vps? Or upload it to mega. Then follow the tut about editing the configuration files.

Sorry @Robot you're going to have to talk to me like I'm totally clueless (which I am).

When you say upload it onto the VPS I have 0 idea. Someone told me to use remote connect to load the VPS up. Do I then upload everything into c://inepro (I think it is, something like that?) through IIS? Then install the emulator and run it?

    Re: Setup VPS and retro

You need to use a program on your PC called "Remote Desktop" to connect to your VPS. You can just copy and paste all the files from your PC onto the VPS through that.

@Derpina then just install IIS and set up everything as normal, open up the emulator and close the VPS connection and it should all still be running, you mean?

Your VPS will always be up, because it's running in a datacenter. An IP address is assigned to it by your hosting company, this way you are able to connect to it.

Yes, but don't use 127.0.0.1/localhost anywhere except as mysql host.
